« Overall experience was satisfactory except that we were disturbed at 4:00 am by excessive noise in the carpark adjacent to the hotel. »

Friendly staff. Clean and comfortable room. Shower was difficult to control although we managed after a little while. Heated towel rail was a bonus according to my wife as we do not always have such a feature. Breakfast was good with ample choice. English breakfast tea bags were often missing in the room so we had to ask for more on two occasions - only a minor point really.

« Quaint hotel - though needs some updating. »

Great location and friendly helpful staff. Facilities a bit outdated and a shame that there is no elevator for heavy bags.

« Overall the hotel and the reception staff were great  »

The overall stay was great (check in, parking, reception staff, room, facilities). Our 3yr old toddler loved it and the staff welcomed him very well. The only disappointment was the evening dinner menu and staff in the restaurant. The waiter didn't understand our dietary questions, and several items are very poorly described on the menu. For example the satay chicken comes with an odd peanut sauce which was unlike any satay sauce I've ever tasted. The Cointreau and Orange Bombe on the dessert menu was actually a cheesecake and not a typical bombe that's made of sponge. Given it's cheese and I have an allergy this should be makes clear. The sauce on the bombe was mango rather than orange with no real orange or Cointreau flavour! Finally the drinks menu listed Sprite as a 330ml drink, but when ordered I was told there wasn't Sprite only lemonade, and it came in a glass that was probably only 250ml. On the bill it went through cheaper than advertised, but it's just not as per the menu.

« OK... »

Hotel overall was clean and in a good location, however whilst the rooms were spacious they were dark and "tired" looking, the carpets threadbare and nets at the window grubby and a distinct lack of plug sockets.... Breakfast was good but had to ask for replenishment of the food on the Saturday morning as no one had noticed it needed doing...

« Not ideal »

Beautiful old building but it wasn't very logical for usage with a pushchair which the staff member who took the booking could have told me. Revolving doors needed removing every time we came in or out which was actually easier than it sounds but still a bit of a faff. Specifically though we were given a room on the top floor and there was no lift so it was a big chore coming in and out. It would have been very nice to know there was no lift or given a room on a lower floor/ground when booking as they knew we had a young baby. Also there was no air conditioning which was very uncomfortable at night, this I perhaps should have predicted with it being such an old building. Otherwise the staff were all very nice and the room itself was lovely.

« pleasant »

a convenient overnight stay, ideally placed near to the Cathedral and city centre. I feel the rooms are a tad outdated but everything else was fine. Bed comfortable and plenty of hot water. The shower/tap attachments could be improved. The breakfast was fine, I did not eat in restaurant evening meal but felt that the restaurant lacked ambience and atmosphere.

« Top class hotel in an excellent city centre location »

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for three nights whilst celebrating my birthday. A very wise decision to close this first class hotel. A clean, tidy, cosy, large and friendly hotel. All the staff in the hotel at all levels were very friendly, welcoming and polite at all times. We upgraded our room which was very well worth it for just £19.00 per night. On site secure parking was excellent. The breakfasts were so excellent. Plenty of choice and served with a welcoming smile. The outside patio/dining area is very romantic and worth experiencing. Thank you and we shall be returning very soon.

« Given a very poor room (105) on first night, which we were moved out of for rest of stay. Don't think we should have been charged for that first night »

After the horrible first night, this stay got better. Room 105, which we were given for the first night, was horrid. The bath looked filthy, the bathroom lamp fitting had melted and there was a dead spider on the bathroom ceiling (looked like he'd been there a while). Many of the tiles were mouldy and coming off the wall. The fire door outside our room slammed shut constantly (it's soft-lock was broken) so we were woken every time someone used that corridor (extending late into the night and starting again early in the morning). In general, room doors at this hotel also close with a huge slam, which is not conducive to a restful stay. If this was a Premier Inn, we would not have been charged for that first night (and the standard of a Premier Inn room would have been a whole lot better). I don't think we should have been charged for the first night. It was also extremely disappointing to pay £6.50 per night to park. It's already an expensive place to stay, car-parking added on feels like a bit of a scam and doesn't endear Mercure to us. After night one and the car park disappointment, the stay got better. We were moved to Room 110, much better. All the staff were very friendly and very happy to help, from reception, to the restaurant, the bar and to the cleaning staff. The outdoor restaurant space is idyllic and fantastic for a warm-weather stay. Reception were pro-active in handing out a Salisbury map and passing on tips of places to go, which is always a nice touch. In both rooms, however, the towels were too small and not as luxurious as you'd fine in, say, a Premier Inn. Overall, I'd be more inclined to book a Premier Inn next time. It seems Mercure is pitching itself above Premier Inn and yet, by concentrating on the basics and consistently getting them right, our stays at Premier Inn are always better. Surely Mercure has to improve?
