« OK »

Excellent bed quality ( -good sleep) but poor room service. Soap had disappeared on second day, no shampoo nor conditioner in shower; carpet not clean. Worn carpet in corridors, all rather to stayed & rather scruffy ! Worst of all: NO LIFT ! The space for one exists in middle of stairs. Reception staff very friendly; breakfast service OK.

Stayed at Mercure in Salisbury, location's great, hotel has rich history. Modestly decorated. Few bits here n there like lack of ash-tray and bins outside main door or umbrellas for guests etc.

Staff courteous. Common areas looked good but a bad odour in the bar. Smelled like sewer. Room comfortable except far too hot and radiator could not be turned off. TRV was on minimum. Caused both of us a poor sleep. Breakfast was good.

« delivered exactly what we wanted for a one night stay, not based on taking time out in Salisbury, although we did do that, but based on trying to get from Southampton airport down to Devon with serious restrictions on trains. »

Our bedroom was fine but like so many old-fashioned English hotels hideously over-heated. We stripped the bed right down and opened the window but still didn't sleep because the room was so hot. And over furnished. If you took some of the furniture out, particularly the occasional table, it wouldn't seem so crammed. The highlight, most definitely, was your breakfast. Really excellent in every way. We'd been staying in a very grand Chateau in France, famous for its breakfasts, and yours was as good if not superior. Keep up the good work. Only suggestion would be to add some sort of cake, alongside the savoury dishes, as the French would do.

« Hotel is tired and needs upgrading to justify prices charged. »

Great location, generally friendly staff, but service was average at best and a number of facilities in "premier " room did not work. Had to open windows to reduce the heat in the room even with the heater turned off. TV didn't and had to call reception but after several attempts and no answer had to go down to reception to get a response. Compared to other hotels we have stayed at over the last month, this hotel does not measure up.

Everything as it should be apart from the over cooked poached eggs at breakfast and I'm sure they would have changed them if I'd bothered to make a fuss.

« Great old style hotel »

Hotel has kept all of its original features, so don't expect a 'modern' hotel experience. Short walk from the cathedral and maim shopping area. Breakfast from the kitchen (kippers & poached eggs) was delicious.

« Dated »

The hotel was extremely dated in places. My room although comfortable was poorly maintained. The curtains had tears in them, the headboards were a strange configuration which made them uncomfortable to rest against. The food was decidedly average at Breakfast.

No heated towel rail, very cold bathroom and wet towels. Boiling hot water from water tap. Two beds pushed together and sold as a double. Breakfast - cold coffee every day and problems in ordering food from the kitchen.

As you had a wedding on the Saturday afternoon/night, the restauant was NOT available,which we found out after we arrived. This would have been nice to have know when I booked the room by phone.

« Not quite as good »

I stayed a few weeks before, and my stay was great, but this time I felt let down. The room I was given a couple of weeks before was changed at the last minute because of a wedding. It was a smaller room of poor quality. I am a recovering cancer patient with poor mobility, and it was difficult to squeeze around the bed. There was only one upright chair to sit in, but lovely Housekeeping managed to swop my chair for a slightly more comfortable. I nearly killed myself in the shower, but Housekeeping brought me for the second day a shower mat. I find it hard enough to stand unsupported, but this shower cubicle had no where to put your shower gel and shampoo except a hole where a tray should be. The bathroom was tiny, and you had to close the door to be able to access the toilet. The view from the window was a roof with a ladder leaning next door to the window. This made me worry about security and someone being able to break in.

Unfortunately Salisbury had recently been in the news and some areas were cordoned off by the police. However, the hotel was located in the main area for bars and shops. The hotel had a tired look and some of the staff also looked tired and unkempt. The food in the restaurant was good though. Our room was very small and the bed not great either. We looked out onto a roof and heating pipes. Not great.

I booked through Accor as a member of their awards scheme. We arrived and entered the car park which appeared to be free, no details were on the web page. The Hotel is very tired, barely a four star no lift we were put on the second floor at the end of a very long corridorwhile it did not seem as if the hotel was any where near capacity. In the ke card was one drinks token, we were a coupe, the Desk Manager told me it would get us I booked through Accor as a member of their awards scheme. We arrived and entered the car park which appeared to be free, no details were on the web page. The Hotel is very tired, barely a four star no lift we were put on the second floor at the end of a very long corridorwhile it did not seem as if the hotel was anywhere near capacity. In the ke card was one drinks token, we were a coule, the Desk Manager told me it would get us two drinks, in the event we did not use tyhe bar. The room was antiquated, my wife found the pillows very hard. We left at around 11.45. I dropped the key off at the desk and started to leave when I was called back by the Desk clerk who said I needed to pay for the car park. I told him that a0 Nothing we had seen or read said that we had to pey and that b) I had checked in with my cc number so I could just leave and any outstanding money would be invoiced. He argued that he needed £6.50, I found this strange and told him again to bill me. Eventually he gave me a card to get out of the car park. This last exchange left a very bad taste in my mouth.

« Good service but fixtures and fittings need attention »

All the staff were excellent but our room had several poor features. The duvet had to be changed and is was very clumpey as if it had been washed wrong. The light fitting over the shower was hanging out and both over bed lamp shades were torn.

« A great central location »

The location was great, a stone's throw from the Centre.The room was fine, quite spacious with comfy beds. However the receptionist we encountered on arrival gave no eye contact, no smile and was quite rude when I asked nicely if our room were a twin. Grumbling she barked that we had to wait for 30 minutes ... On leaving, different person on reception, quite indifferent to us, and didn't even ask whether we'd enjoyed our stay. Serious customer service training needed. I have stayed many Mercure Hotels and have experienced excellent, friendly staff.
