This is the best place to stay if one is a frequent visitor in HK, and would like to avoid the hustle & bustle of Kowloon and the usual touristy sites of HongKong Island. It had everything I needed for a weekend getaway. The restos in the nearby Seaview Crescent are so alive at night. And of course, there's the shopping at Citygate. It may not be that cheap to be at par with US & EU outlets, but selections & offers are good. Not to forget the hotel itself, excellent. c",)

I usually don’t leave a review unless our experience is really exceptional or awfully memorable. It took me a while to decide whether to leave one or just leave it alone. I booked an Executive room and a Standard room last November 18-20, 2018 for my family for our short stay in Hongkong. I love travelling with my family. I usually book hotels that are familiar to me anywhere in the world as long as I can afford it, because I want our trip to be spotless. I had other prospect Hotels (Shangri-La and Gateway Marco Polo in Kowloon). But a friend recommended Novotel Citygate Hongkong as another alternative and I picked Novotel the last minute. Since our stay in Hongkong is a short one and I consider it as a transit vacation from the United States to the Philippines (Hongkong is not our final destination), we have a lot of luggages. 10 to be exact with a carseat. So far our stay with Novotel had been really exceptional, from the great communication before our stay, the proximity to airport and free shuttle (considering our number of luggages which is my greatest concern in picking the right hotel), the early check-in and late check-out, breakfast was really good, staff were really friendly, location to MRT and is less busy than staying in the city. I had no complaints. At that time, I was really conviced that I picked the right hotel. I still am. Until the day of our departure. As I was waiting for my wife and kids to arrive from Disneyland going to the airport, a personnel from the desk (luggage service or Concierge side) approached me and engaged me with a friendly conversation. Turns out he is a Filipino like me. His name is Alex. As a person who was born in a different country and raised in the Philippines, I had the best of both worlds. It warms the heart to meet a fellow Filipino abroad. As we are talking about anything, he noticed that we have a lot of luggages waiting to be loaded to the shuttle. So he offered help to bring our stuff until the check-in counter of the airport. I truly appreciate the offer but he made a gesture only Filipinos know, which is sliding his hand, palm down over the other hand as if he is expecting monetary reward/tip to do this deed. He seems to be taking advantage of the fact that I was travelling with a 6 and 4-year old kids. I said thanks and that we didn’t need any help. I was hoping that that will be the last mention of it and I thought it was just a joke but he repeatedly say the phrase, “ang lagay eh”, which is a slang for “if the money is right.” Around 3 times in our conversation. He even added that his colleague (who just joined us with the conversation) who helped us bring our luggages up and stored most of it in storage will be needing a massage or “physiotherapy” after moving all those. I customarily give tips whether small deeds done to me. What he didn’t know is, the day we arrived, I already tipped the shuttle driver and the person who brought our luggages and that I will still give another tip to the guy (and shuttle driver) who will move our luggages to the shuttle on our departure. Turned out, it was the same guy who helped us. He never complained about it. I started to keep distance from Alex as I was starting to feel uncomfortable with the conversation. My family arrived from Disneyland so I initiated moving our luggages to the shuttle. The guy who helped us the first day was the one helping us again this time. I handed him the tip that I intended to give while this guy Alex was looking. I really intended for him to see the handing of the tip to the other person, in the first place, he has not done anything since our arrival but help us with just moving 2 luggages that day and he has been doing all the talking. He said that he was wondering why didn’t he get any tip from me while the other guy got some. So I asked his name and checked his name tag. He said his name is Alex. He knows that I was upset about the conversation so he went inside the lobby. The other guy seemed to notice that I was upset so he just said not to worry about Alex. I was going to leave this alone hoping that I will forget about it but to this day I feel like I have to mention this encounter. Everything went well with this trip but only the last minute that this guy Alex ruined it for us. The purpose of this email is not to implicate or get this person in trouble. But I believe that there is room for improvement in this kind of matter. We have travelled to many places in the world, stayed-in a lot of hotels, but I have never encountered a person like him. I will still recommend this place to a friend, as many of my friends have asked my opinion on travel tips, but maybe just avoid engaging any conversation with this person. My mother and I stayed here due to its nearness to the airport. I was really expecting a lot from the hotel considering the price and the name it lives up to. And it did not disappointed us. We really enjoyed our room especially the mini kitchenette in the room. The lighting inside the room really relaxes you. The hallway really spoke of elegance and sophistication. The view from our room was also nice since we chose the mountain side. The sea view would have also been nice. The breakfast included in our room was also wonderful. Overall, we had a really comfortable and relaxing stay before our flight.

« What a surprise! Such a nice hotel located very close to HK Airport »

Whenever I have to take an early flight from a city, I would often pick a hotel very closed to the airport, if not on the airport!But good 4-5 star hotels near airport are hard to find!I have used the Novotel brand in Australia but always had the impression that it is a 3.5 stars brand!To my amazement, the Novotel City Gate in HK is better than most 4 stars hotel that I stayed around the world!The room is very well appointed and large (in HK standard) and the bathroom very nice too, with separate shower and toilet (rare in HK)!The bar restaurant is quite good, not pricy and it’s service very friendly.Nice pool & gym!Hotel has it’s own shuttle bus that goes to airport every 20 min! Takes about 15-20 min to get there!This will be my favourite HK Airport hotel from now on!

The staff were all very helpful, we stayed for 15 days so it was longer than usual holiday, loved the house keeping staff, the only downfall would be the wifi kept dropping off and it was a hassle to log back in each time with room number, surname of booking. The solution downstairs was to restart the devices, which was not always helpful

Layover stay in HK before a flight back to India. The stay was overall good. Couple of things I noticed was that the bathtub was not clean, there was a layer of dust and some dead fruit flies in it. The lotion and shampoo was not Knew because the seals were broken. Requested a late check out and they could only accommodate until 1:00pm Which was disappointing. Finally, when loading my lugguage to the airport shuttle, the person dropped my small piece and it rolled and crashed. When I opened the items inside, I had some gifts that were broken.
