This is the former Hotel Canberra established in 1926. It is currently undergoing refurbishment with some rooms already completed. Our refurbished room with King bed was large and comfortable. The bathroom had been modernised. The aircon worked well to heat the room and was quiet in operation. The first night we had dinner in the bistro (which is a bit like a pub rather than a 4 star hotel), but the food was of good quality and arrived promptly, even though we did not have the daily special. Prices are good, especially for Accor Plus members. Happy hour had $5 house wine and beers. Second night we ate in the restaurant, and our meal was of a high standard, and unlike some previous reviews, the courses arrived perfectly spaced for a leisurely meal (my guess is we were there no more than 1 1/4 hours). Breakfast was quite OK, but as we only had continental I cannot comment on the hot food. A previous reviewer has said that breakfast is expensive. I disagree - full breakfast for $24 and continental for $19 (again Accor Plus members get a discount). Non members can pre order a full breakfast for $19 which is pretty good value for this quality hotel. Being an old building there are some quirks to overcome (e.g. we had to go UP a ramp and then DOWN in a lift to our room). The lift was necessary as the stairs are not particularly user friendly. « Great value and comfortable stay »

Stayed in June 2018 and was really impressed with the Mercure Canberra in Braddon, did my research via Trip Advisor and the location was great for all we were doing ie zoo and restaurants, we did have a car though. Upon arrival we were upgraded from Executive to Loft room (two levels so a lot more space to enjoy) and told we were 'guest of the day' and also received free buffet breakfast, welcome drink, parking and a pack of hand warmers!! - so a nice surprise and therefore very good value. Rooms are not modern (could see they were currently upgrading other areas of the hotel, no noise heard at all though) but really comfortable (heating great, as was bed, lounge and kitchenette). The buffet breakfast had a really good selection of cereals, baked items, hot food, coffee so much so that we didn't need any lunch! Very nice helpful staff too.

Room comfortable. The renovations with paint smell wasnt great. I think $10 for a parking area that is not secure is a bit much. Dinner option with pub style good when you have a toddler.

Found that stair case was dangerous. Too dark on staircase even when lite. Up stairs bedroom was dark and needed to be able to open/closed shutters on attic windows. Smell and noise was terrible with work being done.

Staff were friendly and helpful. Location was great, being walking distance to the city centre. Decor and building style are regal. Enjoyedcthe food in tge bistro and restaurant. Bed was very comfy.

Very nice, comfortable, clean (although the cups/cutlery in our room could have been clean / checked by staff as I gather the previous people weren't great at washing up). Also your air conditioning filters do need to be maintained (simply rinse the filter under cold water to removed dust etc), this will help the machine work more efficently and cost less to run.

The bin in the room had not been emptied from who ever had the room before us and the bath was dirty and not been cleaned, it still had dirty ring marks all around the bath. We booked for three in the room (2 adults and 1 child) and there were only 2 bath towels.

« A regular »

A little disappointing this time. Staff were wonderful as always and room was clean tidy and comfortable and I was given a nice newly renovated queen room What I was disappointed with was upon talking to the desk an apparent other guest started telling me about the area was bad and to be careful in the morning when going to my car especially as I was leaving at 5am. People hanging about and get straight into car and lock doors etc. This disturbed me and played on my mind. Also I found out the meal was prepackaged although the waiter did say it was made on the premises but for $36 the beef cheeks were dry and the sauce was thick and gluggy (supposed to be a jus) and the appearance of the meal was very slap happy.

« Love staying here it is relaxing and different to other hotels. »

Over all very good but there are some areas to improve on. My daughter slept on the sofa bed and it was comfortable but the pillows were not. They were lumpy and had not comfort at all. The breakfast was very average I have had better, the fruit didn't look and taste fresh and I ordered a omelette and it had a burnt taste. I think it just needs a good overhaul and some freshening up. On a positive note we did have a beautiful dinner in the dining room and reception was great.

« Comfortable and good location »

Great check in experience, with friendly and helpful staff that remembered us each time we went through the reception area, which was really nice. Room was a good size, with a nice modern bathroom, big tv and comfortable bedding, and a nice Accor member welcome wagon wheel - yum! Hadn't had one of those in years! Had some trouble operating the air conditioner - it took us awhile to sort this out, and was disappointed that there were only free to air channels available on the TV. Breakfast was ok, but the bakery items could definitely be improved - very chewy and certainly not fresh-tasting. Was on the ground floor and had quite a lot of noise in the night from external doors to the courtyard slamming shut after they were opened, and loud noise in the corridor (which meant sleep was not great). I would stay again, but only if I could ensure we weren't on the ground floor...

« Very disappointing in many ways »

I had organised a trip away for both my husband and myself as my husband had surgery 6 weeks ago and has been bed bound and needed to escape the house so I chose Canberra and after researching I chose to stay with Mecure instead of Novotel. What a disappointment and mistake I made. The room was just painted and we both were on Panadol the whole time as we both suffered with bad headaches from the smell of the paint, there was no remote for the heater aircon in the room and had to call Reception and get them to bring us a heater as it was freezing. My husband was on crutches and when we checked in I had no offer whatsoever to help get bags to the room and also no direction on how to get to car park and then to find we were at the back entrance of the hotel and there we no trolleys to assist me so with 4 trips to the car to unpack I was not happy. Staff were not helpful at all and the front office manager needs to get rid of her fake welcoming bouncy attitude. The young girl who did our check out was not interested at all to be at work. When you are an Accor member and we pay extra for the services and then when we do not get them it makes us feel why bother. I feel like I wasted our points we used on this stay. Twice we dined for breakfast and both times we had to wait for the food to be replenished and on the second morning told we had to sit in the foyer of hotel to eat. We dined for dinner and the food was lovely however the service was terrible and very slow!!! We went to dine again on the Sunday night to find it was closed and we had to order the pub food. What hotel has a restaurant that is closed on a long weekend?? We were only supplied with one face washer and handtowel when 2 people in the room, no saucers for our teacup and one set of shampoo and conditioner. Overall we were very disappointed and we will never stay here again and will warn our family and friends of this place as well. When you drive 7 hours for a weekend away and it is terrible I cannot recommend.

Hotel has potential. Enjoyed the large room, howevet at no poibt during booking was it communicated that renovations were taking place, i felt this lacked a little integrity. Paint fumed and lool and feel were suspect due to this and the fee for the room was discounted as i booked months before hand.

« Comfortable without any frills »

The hotel was as I expected, however the lay out of the room meant a sofa bed was used for my children to sleep in. I was not aware of this configuration. The sofa bed was in poor condition with the bed on an angle. I called concierge and they happily organised for this to be changed to two 2 single roll away beds during our time away from the room. I was very pleased at the service here. Overall the experience was okay, as we were only there for one night and the room was satisfactory for our needs.

Lovely hotel which is being refurbished while still maintaining its heritage look. Had a lovely stay there Good selection of restaurants. Pleasent helpful staff. Not too far from the CBD Overall a good experience
