« STRUCTURE AND GREATNESS AWAY FROM THE BEATEN TRACK »

Novotel London Excel was a hidden gem for us. We are used to staying in the heart o London, namely Novotel London City South (Southwark) and Novotel Blackfriars. Truthfully, arriving at Excel is not an easy task for the faint of heart if you are carrying your suitcases. It takes aproximately 1h30 to get there from Heathrow by tube and DLR (with changes at GreenPark and Tower Gateway) and if you are traveling during peak hours... well, I think you got the picture !However, once you arrive at the site you get the feeling the whatever the trouble, it was worth it ! The hotel is wonderfully located by the docks, a few steps from Excel and Emirates cable cars, so you have connections (not very cheap) to any place in LondonThe hotel itself is new, spacious, with all kinds of amenities and a structure you rarely finds in similar hotels in London. However, the staff is not up to the task yet. Seemed to need some training on how to receive guests, make notes of specific requests so as not to "forget", and we were surprised to hear from the bartender that we had to pay for our wine the moment we bought it... even before start drinking. Usually we enjoy our drinks, order something else, linger a bit at the lobby and then pay for whatever we have purchased. Anyway, they might have though we'd run away with the bottle... We requested a late check-out right on our check-in. The lady there checked it out and said ti would be ok. Then the "supervisor" (or just someone who's been working there longer) butted in and interrupted quite rudely saying they could not guarantee a late check-out... that is, till she noticed we were staying at the suite, and realized I was a Silver Member at Le club Accor. Now she changed the tone in her voice and added: "you know what ? We'lll do that for you !"The problem was that on the day we were to leave, our cards to enter the suite stopped working at 12h... someone had forgot to inform the system about the late check-out...All considered, we would definitely go back !

« Good room, excellent breakfasts, but marred by noise and cleaners! »

Room was fine. Breakfasts were great (loved the light buttery croissants and the mushrooms) BUT the last 24 hours we were there there was a repeated irritating intermittent high pitch noise - possibly someone was using the water inthe other room? Also I can’t fault the cleaners for how they cleaned the room, but they shouldn’t enter without knocking (well we didn’t hear them) twice. We had asked for a late check out at 1.30 but twice more cleaners came in to ask what time we were leaving..... The combination of noise for the last 24 hours and what felt like constant interruptions the morning of our stay felt very invasive and was not relaxing AT ALL. I don’t want to cause problems for the cleaners, but surely there should be liaison between reception and your cleaning staff?

« Not the best »

Not the best of experiences. I was told my room was upgraded but when I got to my room all I had was noisy airplanes going past and the back of dull buildings. There was no view. The breakfast wasn’t the best either and one of the members of staff was quite rude and took my plate while I hadn’t finished. I didn’t argue with it being a buffet, but the food wasn’t all that good so I just left it and went back to my room. I don’t like arguing or complaining really.

Brought family down for trip to London, hotel was very clean, staff extremely pleasant and helpful. Gave my daughter's a few soft toy gifts which was a nice touch and brought a smile to their faces. Breakfast was tasty, wide selection on offer. Rooms clean and tidy as you would expect. Highly recommend if this is a location in London you are visiting.

After an initial disappointment when we were told that our room had a nice view when it turned out that it did not we were offered an upgrade to a suite with a view. Naturally we were pleased with the way we were treated in response to the initial disappointment. All staff we came into contact with were very helpful and friendly.

« The Hotel is OK »

Location in respect of London City airport and being an Accor Loyalty card holder are the main reasons for choosing this Hotel. Hotel is clean and tidy, rooms are a of a fair size, staff are attentive and helpful. Overall I would recommend this hotel. However, I'm becoming less sure about the Accor Loyalty card as a benefit - Ok you travel on business perhaps but ot a social user like myself. I mamanaged to get to Gold status but recently had the card reduced to Silver (illness prevented ususal usage last year). I'm going to revert back to Booking.com and the like as often better deals and benefits are obtainable.

« Not fair when compare with my friends! »

My friend and I have booked the same room from a different website. I booked it on the official website and he made his booking on Booking.com. I have got the Accor membership and I did not get any room upgrade. While my friend has got one. Except for this issue, other things were great!
