« Room change »

We had to change rooms as the first room was dark with opaque windows not a view of courtyard as described. Second room was much better and nice. While some of the staff were nice we didn't get an overall friendly vibe from them which would make us think twice about staying again when we see back in Lyon.

5-stars - that's what's written on the wall outside - stands for perfection, or close to it, 4-stars stand for a stay that leaves mostly positive memories if any at all. That, to me, means the Royal is a 3-star place. But let's start with the good things we found: This is one nice looking Hotel! Everything look great here, the breakfast room, the bar, our room, there have been some real good decorators at work. The house is quite old, which is part of the charme. The bed in our room was a dream to sleep in, I will never forget it, really. I am actually in the process of buying a bed from Sophitel (soboutique.com) Unfortunately that was all we can report as positives. The hotel personnel was friendly, but slightly patronizing, and I tried to talk myself out of the idea that it was because we had booked the stay using the accor club points. I am sure we got one of the worst rooms in this hotel, there is always one worst room in a hotel, and someone has to get it, that's OK, I just hope it was not because of our method of payment, that would be too sad. Room number 115, on the 1st floor, was located at the end of the corridor with the rooms facing PLACE ANTONIN PONCET, most of the rooms with a view do on this floor anyway, only a huge sweet, the fancy corner room inside the tower and one more room are facing Place Bellecourt. Our door was next to a door leading to a staircase that emitted greasy kitchen smells, and right above of a delivery gate with lots of noise at all hours. We were hearing a door slamming about every 5-10 minutes. Not sure if it is OK for the 5-Star place to have a room this bad. The other annoyances were not necessarily due to the location or size of the room, they could happen in any other room I suppose. It started in the bath room with the soap dispenser that, upon normal operation, shot the liquid soap about 1m wide and ruined my pants, and fell apart right after doing that. That happens when such a thing hasn't been used in a while and the soap dries up in the spout. I had to climb into the shower to my soap there. The light in the bathroom was too dim for my wife to get some serious makeup done, and the wasn't a heater, so it was a bit cold in there in January. No bidet either, though it was obviously one there before as the traces of installation were still visible. In the morning I discovered that the coffee maker did not work and called the reception. After waiting for 20 coffeeless minutes I called again and floated the idea that maybe a real 5-Star place would just send some coffee to the room instead of making us wait for the repair man. Two cups of coffee from room service arrived within minutes, and ten minutes later someone looked after the machine and announced that it had to be replaced. That apparently did not happen, because the next morning when we found out that the same broken machine was still there. This time tough it got replaced within 5 minutes. In one of the sad paper cups next to the coffee maker was, believe it or not, a pubic hair, right there in the middle of the bottom. Should have taken a picture. The plastic lids going with the paper cups, you know those take away things, was obviously used, because it had coffee stains inside, not as disgusting as the hair, but still…they seem to have a quality control there. I also must report, we met a danish couple who we shared a taxi with to the Charles Aznavour concert. They were perfectly happy with everything and supprised about our dissapointment.

The room I had booked was not ready on my arrival at 4.15 pm so an upgraded room was offered. On the first morning the shower did not work. I found the room furnishings ugly especially the glass table with 4 cheap folding chairs. The sofa was ugly, cheap looking and uncomfortable. There was no bath, just a walk in shower. Most of the seating arrangements in the bar were uncomfortable, stools with no backs. Staff generally were not very friendly with the exception of the concierge who was very helpful and the only person to refer to me by my name.

« Very nice hotel wth charm right in the centre of Lyon. »

We like coming to this hotel because of its very central location, the nice interior décor which makes you feel in a lovely home rather than a hotel and the good service. We stayed one night as we were in transit via Lyon. We had four rooms for the whole family and the hotel accommodated very kindly to have us all on the same floor. The whole experience was very pleasant for the whole family.

« Shame about the welcome or lack of it, »

We arrived in the rain and the luggage transfer and valet parking was impeccable. The reception at the desk was sadly cold with hardly a word of greeting from the man behind it. The guy who sorted our luggage and car was however great and showed us the room . The usual welcome pack was missing and I had to go and ask for it at reception. „oh you don’t have it ? it’s lying here“ then the vouchers were handed over.. We care less about the free drinks and are hardly sensitive types but it spoilt our first impression. Location superb, room fine and quiet. Perhaps he had a bad day,

« Disappointed that the Restaurant de l'Institut Paul Bocuse was closed throughout our stay. »

The "Restaurant de l'Institut Paul Bocuse" is promoted in the Hotel's Web Publications. It was closed however for the 4 days of our stay and the absence of any reference to this key fact, in our Web booking correspondence, left us feeling short changed. Anticipating your likely response "It's a School and the students take school holidays". My reply is:- It's a catering school and having to work unsocial hours/days/Fêtes/etc. is something they should be getting used to, as that is a feature of their chosen career irrespective of locale. The hotel is OK (not excellent). It's redeeming feature is it's location, virtually at the centre with regard to major tourist attractions.

All was quite fine, however the taxi to the airport was not arranged although we confirmed it the day before, resulting in a 25min wait of worry on that day of check out.
