This is the second time we have stayed at the Grand Mercure as we find the location perfect. It was a very busy weekend in Auckland with the All Blacks playing so the hotel was extremely busy. Now I am not sure if something was lost in translation but when making our booking many months in advance we asked for a room away from the lifts, so I was somewhat surprised and disappointed that our room was right by the lift/elevator and unfortunately we did not sleep very well.

Friday night at Hugh Jackman, Saturday to the Civic for School of Rock. Dinner at the Angus Steak House. Grand Mecure really centrally located. Great service from the team on this trip. $1 breakfasts also made the mornings - omelette superb

The room was very comfortable. The restaurant service wasn't great - I was told on check-in that the restaurant was full but I could order room service. When I did that, I was told that my selected item was unavailable.

Overall the hotel is fine however on this visit our sleep was disrupted by road noise and some ealry morning construction activity. Restaurant/lounge area very pleasant with nice outlook.

Stay was okay. Room was tidy (have stayed in same room before). There were ear plugs and an eye mask for night time which is where some of the issues arose - the eye mask was used and had someone else's hair all over it. The ear plugs were about as basic as you can get (I've used a fair few ear plugs over the years), the didn't squash down enough so you can't get them securely into external ear canal so they fall out (in short they were cheap and nasty and not really functional). The underlying problem is of course the overnight noise in central Auckland and the failing of any glazing etc to keep it out. Very poor sleep as a result.

I stayed for seven nights at the Grand Mercure Auckland the hotel is situated in an excellent position a few hundred metres from the harbour front and very close to the main transport interchange., the airport skybus drops off and picks up 20 metres from the front door of the hotel. There are dozens of restaurants within a 300 metre radius of the hotel. The staff are very friendly and will do their best to help with any problems you may have, the rooms are very clean which is a credit to the housekeeping staff, the food is excellent I will be stay again at this hotel next time I am in Auckland.

Good in parts, frustrating at other times. Biggest issue is with the Restaurant. It is appalling that in a large major international hotel in the CBD of Auckland is not available to eat in at 9.27 at night. Especially when it is open till 10pm (still early). The waiter went to the chef and asked and was told nothing after 9.15pm. So then perhaps a bar snack...looked at the menu, not food just nibble. So then room service menu, ok so then ordered from that and asked to have it in the bar area...no has to be in the room. So deliver it to one room, no has to be to individual rooms and you can't use the accor club card. All way too restrictive and no customer centric. That then means $10 extra for delivery when you don't want it anyway. Whilst we were waiting we decided to have a drink in the bar and noticed another larger group turned up after the restaurant and had the same answer. If you say 10pm make it 10pm, you can also ask people to order their whole meal if you after 9.15 if it makes it easier for the chefs to get off and clean up. International customers must find it very strange coming to NZ and not being able to get in the restaurant at that time, most people don't start eating till 9pm in a lot of countries! On a positive note the lady who checked me out really tried hard to recover the situation by adding the discount to my meals and taking off one of the delivery charges and also apologised and said it would be raised with the duty manager. So good on her, she did her job very well, more than the chef who wanted to go home early!

Although information was provided regarding the size of the room I found the room very small-there was one drawer available for two people, only 2 coat hangers were provided in a very small wardrobe (obviously we asked for more and these were provided but we really shouldn’t have needed to ask). As there is a very flimsy sliding door into the bathroom there is absolutely no privacy (the door appeared to be off its track and we asked for this to be fixed which it was but didn’t improve the privacy). I am aware we could have selected a bigger room and had I known how small the room was I certainly would have booked a larger room. We needed to ask for our supplies of coffee & tea to be replenished but all the other housekeeping services were well done. The bar and restaurant staff were lovely and very helpful. Overall while it is in a convenient location I was disappointed.
