« So Convenient for the City and Transport links »

We stayed here several times when it was the Mercure Hotel. Recent up-branding to Grand Mercure has improved the lobby, lifts and general atmosphere and also increased the room prices ! The general manner of all hotel staff was attentive, polite, friendly and helpful; this included the efficient check-in and check-out experience. The dining location and experience have not changed. The views from the restaurant are rewarding and service was good; the menu and wine selection are satisfactory - a few more choices of wine by the glass might be considered. There is a pleasant, comfortable, seating area adjacent to, but separate from, the restaurant and bar. Our room was spacious, comfortable and lacked only an arm chair to relax in. The bathroom was very new, good size and design, with plenty of toiletries and all necessary amenities.

Very comfortable. Excessive street noise however, particularly Sat. Night into Sun. Morning.

« A wonderful weekend break »

We had a wonderful time. The position of the hotel is perfect for exploring the city and enjoying the night views. The room was more than comfortable but what made it a great stay was the staff. Everyone made you feel welcome, they were friendly and interested in making your stay enjoyable.

« Room was clean and there is a good variety of accessories in the bathroom »

Check in was real friendly. The staff in the restaurant were very friendly, although would not rate the food. The room was clean and the bed was real comfy.

« Despite the roadworks and subsequent disruptions a more than pleasant stay. »

Hotel stays are qualified by what's on offer, we had previously been in Sofitel in Wellington which was basically optimal so you are being judged against that. Your room was first class, spacious & well appointed particularly what I look for is a decent sized desk with all plugs etc. easily accessible & you met that requirement. The alleyway carpet outside the lifts need a clean. As always staff make the stay more pleasurable & we can commend the restaurant bar staff for their pleasant & jovial attention. Ms. Eliza is commendable as she remembers people's names after first meeting, good for business. We can commend one of the Indian waiters, a short lad - don't know his name. Once we established a relationship with him he performed very well and had a sense of humour as well which is most important in my view. Some of the male wait staff need more training. We did make one comment about food, on the first night the fish my wife ordered was dry & tasteless, we conveyed that to the Indian lad & asked him to tell the chef. The pork belly was superbly cooked. Next morning at breakfast we noted the restaurant carpet needed vacuuming, a small thing but one that stands out. Check in was OK but we especially must compliment Ms. Carla as she went out of her way to assist and besides that I think she's a beautiful young woman & she has a sense of humour as well which fits with my expectations. Please give her my compliments. As indicated, a very pleasant stay.

I booked a night for my Wife's 40th birthday. The staff helped to make it a special stay and my wife has been telling everyone about her stay. Everyone went out of the way to make sure the day was perfect. It has definitely earned me plenty of brownie points! Thanks Guys

Nice hotel, conveniently located near waterfront for restaurants etc. Nice view from roof top restaurant. Rooms clean , tidy and comfortable. Also able to walk into city centre with ease and then visit sky tower and other attractions.

Dear 688timothy, Thank you for taking the time to post a review about your recent stay at the Grand Mercure! I agree that we have the best placement in the city and we love sharing it with our guests! I am very glad to read that you had a comfortable stay with us and that you enjoyed the stunning view from our Vue restaurant on top floor! « Very pleasant stay. »

Very pleasant stay, with Reception staff being friendly & accomodating. Though they forgot to text me that my room was ready, they made up for it by having my bag sent to my room to wait my arrival. Unfortunately, my rooms mini bar was inadvertently emptied early by Housekeeping. Though on advising Reception of this on checkout, I was compensated which was very pleasant. Room clean, tidy, comfortable bed & good sea views. I'll be back again for another stay.

« Little in the way of elite recognition, falls short of five star soft product »

The Mercure has hard rebranded as the Grand Mercure, which is a five star AccorHotels brand. However the hotel still does not marry up with the quality of elite recognition provided by either the Sofitel or the Pullman in Auckland, and remains truly 3-4 star in the soft category. The associate who checked us in did not acknowledge my Platinum membership, did not provide any drink vouchers, did not inform me about wifi access or our breakfast entitlements. Our room passes were provided in a paper envelope, and not the usual check-in pouch that has hotel and wifi information attached. The four strawberries in the room were disappointing as an in-room amenity, and don’t come close to the in-room amenities provided by the other AccorHotels properties in Auckland, or the Rydges for Platinum GHA members, and at the Hilton for Diamond members (for which I hold status under both). The drink vouchers only entitle you to base drinks, whereas the Platinum vouchers at the Sofitel and Pullman allow you to order any drink from the menu. The Pullman is also significantly cheaper in terms of room rate. We paid for the best room in the hotel, and while it was nice, there are still fixture issues - ie the falls in the shower have not been implemented properly, which means that water from the rain shower seeps out over the bathroom floor, and onto the carpet in the hall. The floor boards beneath the carpet are rotting away as you can tell when you stand on this area. The hotel needs to get this fixed. Strangely there is also a lean which means the bathroom sliding door just shuts on itself, and fails to stay open. The desk chair is also too low, and not at all suitable for working / being productive in this room. So I wouldn’t recommend the room type for business travellers. The breakfast is equally substandard to many other hotels in Auckland - the buffet variety at the Pullman is better, and even though they only have machine coffee, the staff actively ask whether you would like any and will proceed to bring to you, instead of being self serve. Hotels like De Brett’s and Crowne Plaza also have free barista coffee in the morning, and the Grand Millennium has the same in the Club Lounge. At breakfast, we heard many around us being asked if they would like to order any food - eg waffles or omelettes - however once we were seated, staff never approached us again to ask if we wanted anything. There was no indication on the tables or elsewhere that there was same made to order products available. The Crowne, Pullman and Sofitel all have made to order, or omelette stations - so the Grand Mercure falls sort here too. The breakfast setup is also awkward for those less able guests, with the lids on the hot food receptacles heavy to manoeuvre into their stand. Most people didn’t know you could put these in the stand, and held them instead. I saw many Road Scholars who were troubled with this. You also had to line up at the coffee machine for hot water (eg if you wanted tea) there wasn’t a seperate jug for this. Because the food receptacles weren’t electric like many other hotel buffets in Auckland, it meant that food was often cold, too, including scrambled eggs, cooked tomatoes and the like. Overall, the hotel still has a lot of work to do to bring it up to the standard of others in Auckland. We at Point Hacks have been staying at every hotel in Auckland over the past few months, and this has unfortunately been the least desirable of those that we have visited. Especially given we booked and paid for the most expensive room, and I’m a Platinum AccorHotels member.

The room was fine, except it was difficult to work out how the different lights worked in the room. The gym was very small and would only allow 4 people on machines at any 1 time.
