The Old Cataract Hotel was beautiful and atmospheric - the hotel and its grounds were immaculate but retained old world charm. The Kebabgy restaurant was excellent! The staff went out of their way to make my birthday fabulous with a cake and decorations in the room. Thank you! The bar was a lovely place to get a drink but we paid about 1600 Egyptian pounds for 2 gin and tonics which made this the most expensive gin and tonics I'd ever drunk in my life.

The old palace building is very carefully preserved in its historical glory. The new buiding is tasteful and the suites are generous and very comfortable with amazing views. Beautiful bathroom. The Spa is very pleasant, though a little too dark.I found the famous 1902 restaurant a bit disappointing, especially as I was served a small grilled beef steak instead of the announced elabrate veal. When I enquired they insisted it was veal!I found the check in process a bit slow.

I feel useful to share my experience to those who are considering the bad idea of spending one or more days in the "Legend Old Cataract Hotel", belonging to the Accor Group, I presume.. After having reserved a Deluxe room Nile view in tjhe "Legend Old Cataract hotel" since August 2018, the hotel offered to me an anonimous Nile view room in the adjacent New Cataract hotel (an anonimous tower block), simply declaring that after renovation of the Old Cataract palace the denomination "Old Cataract" now embraces both the true "Old Cataract" and the "New Cataract" hotel, and that they had not available a Nile view room in the true Old Cataract palace (i reserved in August) . Thus I preferred a lower grade garden view room in the true Old Catarac palacet: in addition they refused to apply to this room tarif the price reduction due to the Accor members as I am, "since I accepted the changement of room". This behaviour gives the bad impression ( I want to trust erroneous) that the main goal of the hotel is to squeeze money to guests more than offer an hospitality at the level of the reputation of the hotel. Finally, after spending anyway a day in the renewed "Old Cataract" building (garden view room) I have to say that the renovation has been performed on the basis of a low level esthetic sense (too showy), so that the past unique fascination of the hotel is now significantly reduced.
