Beware when booking. I booked very early and the price went DOWN. They gave me a refund. BUT when it went down again they refused to play ball-saying you can only have 1 reduction. I will be very wary to book again early. Hence low grade for value.

We had a great night's stay and would definately stay here again. Good location to everything. Only slight negative was the mattress was very firm, I don't mind a firm mattress but this was just a bit too much even for me. But, wouldn't put us off coming back at all :-)

I had stayed at this hotel once before, so new what to expect. I stayed just for 1 night before a cruise this time. Overall, it is a good hotel, but a few things were rather amateurish. Check in was quick, easy and very friendly, though I had to ask for the Silver free drink voucher as it was not offered at first. When I went to the bar to order my drink, the General Manager (I assume) was in full conversation with a supervisor. After being ignored for a couple of minutes, they decided to call for a staff member to serve me rather than doing it themselves.... Odd and unprofessional. Later, when I went back to the bar to order a bottle of Prosecco.... none were stocked in the bar. The poor barman had to go to the cellar to get some, leaving the poor trainee on his first day alone to manage the bar. Not that it was busy, but having worked in the hotel business myself, supervisors/managers should have checked the bar was stocked properly. I had room service dinner. Food was good if a bit limited in choice and nothing spectacular. One thing I did find totally mad though: all desserts had some sort of ice cream included! Not a good idea for room service, unless you enjoy melted dessert after your main! The room was good, it is the old still Novotel design, but I do like the moving desk. One feature that I would like to see in refurbished properties. One very good point: all staff members I encountered were very friendy. Would I stay again? Probably, though I may give Holiday Inn a try....

Worst Novotel ever encountered

Dissapointing at every level. This was supposed to be a relaxing weekend for myself and my wife (purchased using Tesco vouchers) in a hotel that I was sure I could rely on to provide quality and service. I have held an Le Club card (0…) for what must now be approaching twenty years and have used Novotel extensively for both business and pleasure all over Europe so I thought I knew what to expect. How wrong could I be? The front desk staff seemed unaware that Tesco no longer issues physical paper vouchers, insisting that they needed them, despite having the full code and detail confirmed on their own screens. The resturant was appauling. I ordered a steak blue, the waiter was unfamiliar with this term, but after asking for a definition wrote it down. Almost an hour later a steak I could hardly even describe as medium was deleverd (without the bernaise sauce I ordered as a side dish). After sending the steak back the sauce was delivered, which stood on the table and congelealed whilst I waited for a replacement. When that came it was probably just on the blue side of rare. At this point the waiter apologised and provided me a free drink. Apparently there was a party of 200 in somewhere and the kitchen wasn't staffed up for it. I ordered the cheese for a desert (the menu stated "Sussex Charmer Cheese and Handmade Biscuits"), again, almost an hour later it came out, in disbelief I took photo's of the plate, which I am happy to share with you if you wish. on the plate was a handful of cream crackers and two chunks (I can think of no other word to describe this) of what I can only describe as cooking cheddar. I tasted a bit and left the rest. I have to say however that the choices my wife made, a stir-fry noodle dish and a chocolate brownie were acceptable, despite the time taken for service. In addition to these two main points: The hotel main bar was understaffed, resulting in a huge que for service there. On trying to put some dried apricots on a bowl of yogurt there were flies in the apricot bowl. One of the lifts was out of action. The bathroom door in our roon (421) jammed and couldn't be opened. This was reported to reception and remediated. All I can say is that in my view, this hotel falls so far below the standard I have come to expect from Novotel it is a farce. I certainly will not be returning.

Regarding your experience in the restaurant, I am once again sorry. A steak bearnaise "blue" was a great choice and should have been served quickly. We are well organised and we are used to high volume service, mixing restaurant and large functions in banqueting. The delay of service in the restaurant is not usual. Looking at the technical issues, I am sorry if this not fixed prior your arrival. We appreciate your sharing your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future. Having stayed in a couple of Novatel hotels Southampton was a little dated with the bedrooms first time I’ve come across a separate toilet it made me feel very Shut in and the old artic on the wall made it feel old. I’m used to modern in all areas that’s what novatel has always delivered previously in my stays. We had a problem with sink plug it was falling apart so couldn’t have a bath even if we wanted to and no buttons on the duvet cover found that very odd the staff were lovely and restaurant was nice apart from when a staff member dropped some plates a little chip hit my son he was ok so didn’t complain Swimming pool could of been a bit bigger and a separate entrance would be better didn’t feel eight walking through the gym and changing rooms certainly need updating sorry to Moan but sort from that location fab and we had a lovely few days x
