Stayed 2 nights whilst visiting friends in Southampton. I travelled by train and the hotel is a short walk from the station. Hotel facilities are good with comfortable (but a little on the small size) rooms en-suite bathroom. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. I cannot praise the staff enough. They were most helpful, hard working and always with a cheery smile. The only downsides were the air cooling system which, in my allocated room was very noisy (the staff quickly facilitated a change of room but, although the system was much quieter, it really didn’t cool the room very much) and the price hike for the second night (a Friday). Nevertheless, if I’m in Southampton again, I’ll probably pay a return visit.

good location, clean and generally a quite room. good internet connection Breakfast mediocre and had a sausage that definitely looked as from previous day...bad. No juice 2 days running. Toilet intermittently stopped flushing on day 2.

I stayed here for one night (1-2 July 2019) and also in June 2016. Where there appears to have been a change, this is noted. ACCOR is rare among the big hotel chains to co-site its different brands, in this case Novotel, ibis and ibis budget. One result in this case is very good parking facilities. The immediate surroundings are a very large retail park: great, if your reason for visiting includes shopping. These ACCOR hotels are also close to Southampton Central Station, and the hotel is called “ibis Southampton Centre”: words like “Centre” or “XX station” do not necessarily mean the hotel is very near the item mentioned, but in this case the name is largely justified. However, the walking route between the hotel complex and the station is far from simple. Thanks to online check-in, checking in at Reception was swift and efficient. The Welcome drink was appreciated. My room (320, [322 in 2016]) was clean, well equipped and fairly spacious (photo), for me as a single occupant; it might have been a bit cramped for two occupants. It looked onto a car park for the nearby retail centre and beyond it a busy street (photo), which was surprisingly quiet while I was in the room (very good double-glazing?). There was an air-heating/cooling unit (photo), with instructions on use (better). WiFi access was easy. In the room, there were two electric sockets (just enough) next to the fairly generous workspace (photo) and two more sockets under the wall mirror. The tea/coffee-making facilities were appreciated. The bathroom was well equipped and had both bath and shower: a rarity at this level. The shower head fastener was not working (photo). I reported this at Reception on departure The television and radio had some 90 channels, entirely in English; in contrast to my visit in 2016, many TV channels, especially non-English-language ones, had “No signal”: the very wide selection of languages in the non-UK channels (the highest channel numbers) which I noted during my visit in 2016 had disappeared. There was still a good selection of radio stations. There appeared to be only one guest lift; during my stay, this was adequate. One problem sometimes experienced by hotel guests emerging from a new room for the first time is uncertainty about the direction for the lift. Some hotels now put arrows in the corridors; in this case, there was one unobtrusive sign hanging from the ceiling by the lift, which was virtually invisible from my room. I arrived at lunchtime; the hotel website entry on lunch was ambiguous, but the tables were laid, with menus. When I asked the waitress what the soup of the day was, she said she would ask but continued to lay the tables, ignoring me. There are plenty of alternatives in the nearby retail area. The breakfast buffet was included in the reasonable price; the hot food was far more varied than is generally the case. When I arrived, the hot drinks machine appeared not to be functioning (photo); this was later remedied. The room number check was erratic: I watched one couple wait quite a long time for a member of staff to appear. After finding free newspapers in the breakfast area at several ibis hotels in other countries, I was disappointed at their absence here. For the first time in a long while, I left an item in my room on departure; the efforts of the staff to return it were impressive. It was ironical to read in my automated post-stay email for ACCOR: “P.S For great rates and exclusive packages book your next stay at ibis.com. And, if you are a regular traveller you could benefit from joining our loyalty programme Le Club Accorhotels.” I have been a member of the ACCOR loyalty club for many years, and the invoice attached to that email referred to my discount. Is it beyond the abilities of the ACCOR IT staff to devise a more sophisticated system? (Exactly the same in 2016)

The first room we were given, the fan was clicking noisily. In the second room the TV control did not work but we changed it for the one from the first room. The room was very hot and it was not possible to get it any cooler. The "Big desk" advertised was not big and very narrow. The Carbonara was not available at dinner even though it was only 6.30. Breakfast was reasonable.

Great location. Friendly staff. Okay rooms. Standard IBIS essentially. Price fair this time but sometimes I have looked and the tariffs defy belief. However, my daughter joined me for breakfast on the second day and she is coeliac. We asked for the allergy book but the staff had no idea what we were talking about and even once they understood they struggled to find it. Fine to have inexperienced staff on but there needs to be someone who can deal with basic questions. Note that the staff were very friendly and as helpful as they could be, no criticism of them as such. Breakfast was good on the first day but on the second the bacon was unappetising to say the least. Sorry but not really good enough and below IBIS usual standards which are normally very high.
