« Nice hotel, »

Nice hotel near centre of town, 10 minute walk, nice rooms, nice staff, hotel is as all Novotels are but what really makes me angry is no free expresso with breakfast, you pay for breakfast but only get cheap filter or powder coffee, only sad people drink that crap, over 80% of coffee drunk in Europe is expresso, not only that the car parking is expensive

« Hotel central easy walking. »

No complaints just good honest helpful staff nothing to much trouble.

« Excellent! Especially the attitude and service given by the staff. »

As stated above the staff were excellent. The rooms were well designed, spacious, airy and bright. The only blemish was that one of the lifts was out of order whilst we were there but that did not present any real problems. The hotel is within walking distance of York centre and there is a pleasant river-walk behind the hotel.

« Ok »

Stayed for 2 nights. Bathroom sink had a bad smell coming from the plug hole. Thought the £25 car park charge was too much. Had a dog in a room down the corridor barking for hours. Obviously been left in the room by the owner. Reported to reception, came back 3 hours later and it was still barking

From check-in we greatly enjoyed our stay. It was convenient to get into the city, the rooms were great and we couldn’t have been more pleased!

« Satisfactory stay, could be improved. »

The hotel was recommended to us by my parents for the location and they have stayed there previously. The hotel is modern but in areas needs revamping, e.g. Carpets on the stairs are grubby, the lift - only one working. Fortunately we were on the first floor so didn't use it only on arrival with luggage. The room was clean and modern but the layout impractical. A tiny toilet as you walk in with no wash basin which meant you had to walk round to the main bathroom in the main room. Frosted glass panels on the doors of the bathroom which meant you disturb anyone in the night if you turn the light on or early morning. Not ideal. Our room overlooked a building site even though we had asked for a decent room as it was our anniversary. Work started early banging first thing, each day until quite late. On leaving our room on our after our fist nights stay we returned after being out most of the day approximately 4pm to find our room had not been cleaned, nor bed made. After complaining to reception it was looked at and we had to leave the room to be cleaned, not ideal. Breakfast was very good, good choice and service. Staff overall were polite and helpful. On checking out the gentleman on reception was apologetic and offered to remove the cost of the carpark to compensate some of our small disappointments of our stay. Overall the stay was satisfactory but could have been better due to a few miner details. York is beautiful and we had a great weekend visiting the sights, eating and drinking. Not cheap to stay so overall a little disappointing paying over £350 for two nights B/B would only stay again if the cost was much lower due to the factors stated.

« Enjoyable Weekend »

Very friendly and efficient, nothing too much trouble. Breakfast was hot and very good choice. Air con was very much needed and worked a treat! Nice walk along the river to the centree, very happy with the location.

« Disappointing »

I have previously stayed at the Novotel for business many times and not having stayed over the last year was looking forward to a revisit and had specifically chosen to stay here whilst in York. I was however disappointed in the overall standard of cleanliness in the room and although I mentioned this on departure didn't feel that it was really taken on board. The room had not been vacuum cleaned prior to my stay and it appeared visibly given state of the black print on the carpet that this had been the case for some time. Whilst the bathroom and toilet were clean (although there was an overwhelming smell of drains coming from the bathroom overflow where it had not been recently cleaned) there were visible layers of dust and dirt on the surfaces, under the furniture as the lower levels were visible. on the recessed levers of the drawers was an extensive collection. it was a family room with 2 single beds in it and it may not have been used for a while, but it was the first time in my many years of travelling that I had encountered this. It was for this reason I reported it to the desk at checkout and received a faint and disappointing response that they would let housekeeping know. I was also told that the smell of drains was due to the river! When I said I hadn't encountered this before the lady on reception said that they perhaps hadn't used "the powder to clean the overflow" which certainly appeared to be the case. Because of the levels of dust in the room I awoke in the morning sneezing and with an irritated throat. I had encountered a poor nights sleep due to this and the lack of firm pillows. As mentioned I have stayed at the Novotel many times before, but this was the first time I had encountered this which was disappointing as I was really looking forward to my stay.

« Great stay (1 night) for family of 4, Shame to charge so much for their own car park. »

Everything fine, good clean rooms, great to have swimming pool. That with location was why we selected it. 2 sofa beds arranged for our kids in same room was fine. Normally I only have to pay car park fees if the car park is elsewhere/owned by another company, this also seems to be quite a hefty amount for one night (£12.50). Other than that it was en enjoyable stay.

« Nice rooms, very helpful staff but housekeeping a bit random »

The staff are extremely helpful and accommodating and sorted out all our queries, however, our room was not serviced in the three days we were there. Breakfast good and plenty of food. Pool quite small and it's a bit embarrassing going to reception before and after your swim to sign in/out. Not enough changing space at pool to get the family properly undressed/dressed, so we had to scoot back to our rooms with towels and soggy hair etc. Good location and the pool is a bonus in a city centre location.

« Satisfied with the stay. »

Most of the experience was good, though I didn't like the way the housekeeping staff came to door and asked what we needed instead of cleaning the room. I also felt the rooms didn't really look inviting, too plain. Reception and dining areas and staff first class, lovely pool .

« Good hotel »

The hotel is situated near the Castle area of the city on the river Foss. The rear exit from the hotel leads to the river walk, one way to the main road, the other to a park. Before then, there is a bridge conecting to the river walk along the Ouse, into the city.I was made to feel welcome on my arrival, though there was no room available at 13.00. There seems to be a strict check in policy “not before 14.00”. (I have been able to check into Ibis hotels at this time in larger cities.) My room was one that had been renovated and was large, light and airy. The bathroom has a separate shower cubicle as well as a bath. The lighting was very good. The furnishings are modern and fairly comfortable. ( I am short so the sofa was too high for me but fine for most other people. The wardrobe is modern, about 10 centimetres off the floor. There, the dust lay quite thickly on the carpet even though a vacuum cleaner could easily fit underneath to clean it. I was surprised that no attempt was made to clean it during my stay. However, the reception staff dealt with my requests for a comb and booked a taxi rather promptly.I didn’t use the swimming pool which seemed to have a lot of use whenever I walked by.Service at breakfast was good. The choice of food was varied and the staff topped up frequently. Perhaps consideration could be given to providing more choice of herbal and fruit teas as is the case in other hotels in this chain in England. As a Siver card holder, I was disappointed that my request to keep my room for longer than the check out time was refused. Initially, the receptionist granted it but she was rudely contradicted by other receptionist who informed me that the hotel was fully booked so there was no possibility of extending my time. As quick check on the AccorHotels website showed that there were rooms available.

« Adequate »

The room was nice but the shower leaked. Hotel staff were all very friendly. The restaurant seemed a little dis-organised. Wi-Fi was extremely poor but luckily didn't need to use it much.
