Celebrate 2015 the Fiji way

Celebrating the New Year coming in is one of my favourite past times - and each year I’m always looking for a new and unique way to do it. Therefore, being asked to ring in NYE in beautiful, tropical Fiji felt like fate - and I leapt at the chance. Having spent a decent chunk of the previous month in freezing Stockholm - going to Fiji with my boyfriend to start a new year was an extremely exciting idea.

I had spent Christmas with my family in Esperance, a sleepy seaside town in Western Australia. Our journey to the Fiji islands was a long one - but arriving in the tropical sunshine invigorated us immediately, and we eagerly awaited arrival at the hotel, winding through the streets of Nadi where the streets were lined with palm trees and the locals give you a friendly wave as you drive past.

Fortunately the drive was short as Nadi is in the east of the main island Viti Levu, meaning we only had a short hop from the airport to Accor’s Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa which is situated on the small island of Denarau.

Arriving at the hotel, we were greeted with a welcome drink of tropical juice and serenaded by a trio of smiling Fiji Island Natives. Our bags were whisked away and we made a beeline for the pool - and we had arrived in paradise. In my excitement I was suddenly starving, so next item on the agenda was consuming some delicious seared tuna under the traditional fibre shades, sitting on a platform between the pool and oceanside with a cocktail in hand. Living the dream!

We returned to the room after eating where I finally had the chance to try out the Google glasses. I was looking forward to this moment! It’s pretty easy to get the basic hang of the functions - the glasses are very easy to wear and use. I loved the video recording function and looked forward to utilising it as the night wore on. I wouldn’t describe the glasses as practical, the feel is quite obvious on the face - but I like the gimmick! It’s fun.

The hotel began setting up the party early in the evening and the music began playing while we were enjoying a very delicious seafood buffet in one of the restaurants. You could feel the energy building amongst the guests, who donned glittery masks according the theme - The Masquerade! Two large bonfires were built on the beach and lit as the sun began to set - such a romantic scene. The energy began to build and we joined in with the dancing and fun. I loved being able to celebrate with the fellow guests, who had arrived from all around the world.

Finally the moment of the countdown approached, the reason we were all here - and my favourite part! The DJ turned down the music so our voices could be heard in unison, the clock struck midnight and everyone began hugging and kissing. The feeling like a collective exhalation, we all get a fresh start in the New Year - and in Fiji we enjoy the luxury of experiencing it in one of the first places in the world.

The day was long and we agreed to rest early so we could make the most of January 1st, feeling great into 2015. The following day we had booked a Jet Ski Safari so we could explore the very nearby islands that could be viewed from the beach. You can’t come to Fiji and not make the most of the paradise that surrounds you and apparently there are 332 islands to visit!

The hotel is described as a place to “Escape to the South Pacific and retreat to a Fiji beach resort merging luxury hotel facilities “ and really the hotel was a delight. So thank you to Accorhotels.com for organizing the event on the beautiful Fiji islands but also to allow me to celebrate and share this wonderful experience via wearable technology.
