There’s no better way to put good weekend weather to use. Take advantage of serene harbour views or explore one of the national parks a little further away. Sydney has a plethora of gardens, parks and reserves set against breathtaking landscapes for you to see. Pack a basket with some local produce and drinks from a nearby brewery or cellar door and make your way to one of Sydney’s iconic picnic spots – you’re really spoilt for choice!
Royal Botanic Garden Sydney: It may be in the heart of the city, but the sprawling 30 hectares that make up Royal Botanical Garden couldn’t feel further away. The oldest botanic garden in Australia provides an array of picnic spots and views for you to choose from. Choose from the shady fig trees of Fig Tree Lawn or the harbour views of the Amphitheatre Lawn, and walk off your lunch in one of the neighbouring gardens.
Chinese Garden of Friendship: Modelled after private gardens from 5th century China, this garden offers a tranquil escape at the southern end of Darling Harbour. The landscape is designed in accordance with the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism and features a range of pathways, exotic plants and even a koi fishpond.

Sydney beaches

Synonymous with Sydney weekends are its world-class beaches. The best beach in Sydney will differ depending on the local you’re speaking to—it’s worth trying out a few different spots if you have time. From morning dips to afternoon surfs, we recommend making space in your weekend for a beach trip. Just remember to check the temperatures beforehand and bring a warm wetsuit if you enjoy a dip in the colder months.
Manly Beach: Encompassing three kilometres of soft, pristine sand, Manly Beach is a popular destination for surfing, swimming or just relaxing by the sea. The beach is patrolled by surf lifesaving clubs to keep swimmers safe as they enjoy the water. Just be sure to swim between the red and yellow flags.
Shark Beach: Don’t be fooled by the name – Shark Beach is one of the most serene beaches you’ll find in Sydney. The name actually refers to the shark net which protects the beach. There’s a charming café and kiosk at the beach for coffee and a bite to eat once you’ve worked up an appetite.
Shelly Beach: Part of Cabbage Tree Bay in Manly, Shelly Beach is a protected marine reserve, making it a popular destination for divers and snorkellers alike. It’s not uncommon to spot some marine life enjoying a swim next to you thanks to the relatively shallow water of the beach (a maximum depth of only roughly 12m). Take a walk along the bush track that trails the beach before dipping your toes in to cool off.
