Whether you're visiting Sydney or a local, there are plenty of fun indoor activities in Sydney for when you'd rather spend the day inside.

Have a great time regardless of the weather, especially when you’re on holiday. Whether you’re exploring Sydney solo, enjoying a getaway with friends or family, or making the most of the city with a partner, there are plenty of fun Sydney indoor activities. Add these to your list of fun things to do in Sydney.

Take in a Show

Day or night, rain or shine, a trip to the theatre is a great indoor activity in Sydney. Visit the Lyric Theatre, the Capitol Theatre, the Enmore, or even the Sydney Opera House. Comedy, drama, musical theatre, live musical performances, and more decorate the stages throughout the city of Sydney. Browse the theatre’s websites ahead of time to secure your tickets to the show. Each venue will change what shows are on throughout the year, so there’s always something new around the corner if you miss out on this season’s tickets.

Visit a Museum or Gallery

There are plenty of great Sydney indoor activities, and one of the most fun things to do in Sydney when you prefer the indoors to the outdoors is a day spent with art. Fortunately, Sydney is home to many art galleries and museums, so you’ll have your pick of the bunch to be inspired by Sydney’s art & soul.
Art Gallery NSW
There’s always something happening at the Art Gallery of NSW. With complimentary tours throughout the day and exhibitions to catch while they’re in town, you’ll be soaking up culture.
Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA)
In The Rocks, Sydney, the Museum of Contemporary Art houses some of the most innovative, thought-provoking art in the state, and often hosts captivating exhibitions from all around the world.
In 2023, the MCA will be hosting the first solo exhibition from South Korean artist, Do Ho Suh. There’s always plenty to discover at the MCA, so even if you’ve stopped by before, it’s worth a second (or third, or tenth) visit.
Australian Museum
If you’re strolling through Hyde Park Sydney and the heavens open, head for cover in the Australian Museum. The first museum in the country, the Australian Museum in central Sydney mixes culture with science. With an impressive animal collection that extends to the Jurassic, and cultural artefacts from indigenous communities, you’ll easily weather the storm here.
When you’re done with museums and galleries, head over to Haymarket and discover Australia’s largest Chinatown.
The White Rabbit
The White Rabbit Gallery shares the best of Chinese art, delighting visitors with works of art that bursts with energy and are technically superb. Wrap up your visit with a stop at the tranquil Tea House for some refreshment.
