Free events coming up in Melbourne

Heading to Melbourne soon? It might pay to check out some of these free events coming up in the city. They're all entirely free to attend, which means more dollars in your pocket for delicious treats and other activities!

Moomba Festival

Melbourne's Moomba Festival runs from March 7-10 at Alexandra Garden and the picturesque Birrarung Marr park.
This entirely free event has been running in Melbourne for 60 years and the 2014 program will not disappoint.
The four-day long event runs over the Labour Day long weekend and draws crowds over one million strong.
Both visitors and locals will enjoy sitting on the banks of the Yarra, taking in the atmosphere.
There's the Birdman Rally on March 9, which involves contestants launching themselves off a four metre platform with wings attached to the costumes.
Inevitably, they'll end up in the Yarra - though it's all in good fun!
On March 10 at 11 am the Moomba parade will excite attendees on St Kilda Road.
The Moomba carnival runs every day of the festival from 11 am until 11 pm.
From Saturday through to Monday there are evening fireworks displays, which festival attendees can appreciate from the banks of the Yarra.

The Myrtleford Festival

Held on Queen Street, the Myrtleford Festival welcomes young and old.

Though not strictly in Melbourne, the area is less than 3 hours drive from the Victorian capital, so why not consider hiring a car or jumping on a bus for a night away?

From March 6-10, visitors to the city can soak up a little bit of Myrtleford and enjoy a range of exhibitions - whether it's art, photography or embroidery.

Tours run around the areas plus there's also a street parade and live music.

Motorcycle and bicycle rides, sporting events and movies are also jam-packed into the five day festival.

Thai Culture and Food Festival

The scintillating Thai Culture and Food Festival is a free event - although you might like to take a bit of spare cash to buy some authentic goodies!

In its 11th year, the annual festival is now a two day event, held at Melbourne's Federation Square.

Attendees can head down to Federation Square's River Terrace on Saturday March 15 to enjoy a range of Thai cuisine, massage and live music.

Adults might head along to the Singha Beer Garden on the same day for an ice cold brew amid the hustle and bustle of the day.

With authentic Thai street food and Thai barbeque, it's worth heading along with an empty stomach!

The following day (March 16), the festival will kick things off with a traditional blessing led by Buddhist monks.

The opening ceremony will be a delightful explosion of colour and Federation Square will again offer delicious food.

However, there will also be Thai crafts too!

With dance and kickboxing influenced by this Southeast Asian country running throughout the day, visitors are sure to find entertainment in some form.

Last year, 65,000 people flocked to Federation Square to soak up the convivial atmosphere and sink their teeth into some delicious Thai fare.

Will you be one of them this year?

Every Greyhound Has A Story

If photography interests you, then be sure to head along to Melbourne's Flinders Street for an emotive exhibition that runs from March 14-20.

Every Greyhound Has A Story is a collection of visually arresting work from Australian photographer Josh Robenstone.

The work tracks the lives of dogs that have gone through the Greyhound Adoption Program, which is run by Greyhound Racing Victoria and aims to place retired racing dogs in homes around the country.

The exhibition will be held at 524 Flinders Street, which is a converted warehouse that's a cultural hotspot of exhibitions, parties and fashion events.
