7 Margaret River Activities That Aren’t Wineries

Margaret River is renowned for its wineries, but there’s so much more to explore – here are 7 of the best attractions.

Margaret River is recognised as one of the best wine growing regions in Australia, attracting thousands of visitors each year. However, there are so many more things to do in Margaret River than its famed wines; here are seven top attractions to try once you’re all wined out.

1. VISIT SPECTACULAR CAVES

Margaret River is home to over 150 limestone caves, and some of them are open for exploration. Visits to the caves range from self-guided to organised tours and even more adventurous ‘abseil-your-way-in’ expeditions. Three of the most popular caves include Ngilgi, Jewel and Mammoth, known for their expansive caverns and impressive formations.

2. KAYAKING & CANOEING

One way to really appreciate the beauty of the Margaret river region is by kayak. Paddle quietly amongst the native bushland, stopping to hike trails and sample the region’s best chocolate, coffee and wine. One highly celebrated tour is Surf N’ Dirt, an all-ages, all-levels day trip that combines hiking, mountain biking and time on the water.
If you’re more into sea exploration, YellowFin tours operate a kayak trip with the goal of landing your dinner. Keep an eye on the water for the humpback, southern right, minke and blue whales in June to early December, and dolphins year round.

3. GNARABUP BEACH

Gnarabup is located on the coast only 9km west of Margaret River. Walk along the coastal path, and then hop down the steps to the white sands below. Spot dolphins from the shore, or jump in for a swim in the waves. If you prefer calmer waters, the little bay near Gnarabup Road is a great spot to try out paddle boarding. For some light refreshments, the White Elephant Café is a great stop for coffee and muffins.

4. HORSEBACK RIDING

For something a little bit different, why not try a horseback trail at Jesters Flat in the beautiful region of Rosa Brook, 18km east of Margaret River. There are trails and tours lasting anywhere from one to four hours depending on your experience and where you’d like to go. Take in the fresh air and natural bushland as you ride, exploring this beautiful part of Western Australia.

5. PROVIDORE

One of Margaret River’s more unusual activities, Providore is no ordinary store; it’s a foodies’ treasure hoard filled with homemade jams, pickles, chutneys and so much more. Covering the whole flavor spectrum from savory to sweet, with oils, sauces, liqueurs and wines all open for tasting, you’ll soon find something that tickles those taste buds. If you’re looking for some treats to take home, this place has it all.
As if that wasn’t enough great food, The Margaret River Chocolate Company is only around the corner – with free entry and tastings you’ll do well to need lunch! Check out their Instagram: @margaretriverchocolatefactory

6. BORANUP GALLERY

The Boranup Gallery showcases the skills and works of Australia’s leading artists. There’s a variety of arts and crafts on show including woodwork, metal craft, paintings, pottery and glasswork available for purchase should something take your fancy, and a lovely café on site to grab a bite.

7. 10 MILE BROOK WALK

There are lots of lovely places for a walk around Margaret River, but the 10 Mile Brook Trail gets our vote. To the north of the town, the trail begins in Rotary Park and tracks along Margaret River for 7.5km one way. No bushwalking experience is required as the route is mostly flat. For the more adventurous, hire a mountain bike in Margaret River and take to two wheels to explore the area.

If you’re venturing in and around the south east coast of Australia, start your getaway at one of our Margaret River hotels to really appreciate this wonderful part of the world and get in as many Margaret River attractions as possible!
