6 Unique Things We Bet You Haven’t Done In Melbourne

Recommendations from Melbournians to guide you on the things to eat, drink, see and do on your visit.

If you’ve been to Melbourne before or at least started planning your upcoming visit, you’ve likely covered the popular sites and activities like a footy game at the MCG, a stroll through the graffiti-laden laneways or experiencing ‘the edge’ on top of Melbourne’s Eureka Tower. Here we share some extra ideas to pop on your list that are a bit more unique, weird and wonderful.

1. DRINK WILD AND WACKY COCKTAIL CONCOCTIONS AT THE CROFT INSTITUTE, MELBOURNE CBD

If you want to explore one of the city’s more interesting laneway bars, The Croft Institute is certainly one to visit. Hidden down a grungy Melbourne laneway, this science-lab themed venue sure does stand out from the crowd. Expect to find beakers, Bunsen burners and syringe cocktails; DJs playing in the level 3 ‘gymnasium’ and a vibe that’s equal parts eerie and eccentric.

2. TAKE PART IN A ONE-OF-A-KIND ‘CINEMA’ EXPERIENCE AT UNDERGROUND CINEMA, VARIOUS LOCATIONS

If you have the luxury of planning your trip ahead of time, try to snap up some tickets to Underground Cinema (UGC), an experience unlike any other. Held in a secret location that is revealed in the days before the event, don’t expect to sit down and simply watch a film here. UCG is a live and immersive event likened to being on a film set and what’s even cooler is you’re part of the action too. Your session finishes with a screening of the movie at the end. Past events have seen guests partake in FBI training at Quantico before a screening of Silence of the Lambs and hitting the phones in Wall Street style.

3. LEARN HOW TO MAKE THE WORLD’S BEST MARGHERITA PIZZA AT 400 GRADI, EAST BRUNSWICK

400 Gradi’s pizza masterclass shares some important pointers on pizza making from one of the best, pizzaiolo, chef and restauranteur Johnny Di Francesco. 400 Gradi took the crown for best pizza margherita in the world in 2014 so your taste buds are in good hands here. The hands-on class includes coffee upon arrival before you jump right in and learn how to make your very own dough from scratch! Later on you’ll get to eat the finished product over a glass of wine. Buon appetito!

4. TAKE A HIP HOP YOGA CLASS AT YOGA 213, RICHMOND

Move through your yoga practice with a big fat grin on your face as you’re backed by some epic and uplifting tunes. At Yoga 213 their aim is to share the happiness of yoga with each and every yogi that walks through the door, and remind us that while yoga is great for both body and mind, it needn’t be all business all the time. The music that accompanies each class is a carefully curated mix of hip hop, R&B, acoustic, electronic and reggae beats – think Biggie and Snoop guiding you through the class!

5. SCOUR THE STALLS FOR A SECOND HAND STEAL AT CAMBERWELL SUNDAY MARKET, CAMBERWELL

A short drive or train ride from Melbourne’s CBD, Camberwell Sunday Market is one of the best spots in Melbourne to pick up anything second hand, retro, antique and vintage. Your Sunday morning stroll here is best enjoyed with a coffee in one hand, and hot jam donut in the other while you decide which goodies to take home with you!

6. HAVE A BARISTA’S BREAKFAST AT ST ALI, SOUTH MELBOURNE

This killer coffee combo is hand-picked by some of the best barista’s you’ll find in this coffee-crazed city. The Barista Breakfast consists of an espresso, cappuccino and a filter coffee that’s sure to fire you up. If you’re a coffee fiend you may just like to keep this one to yourself, or share with your travel companion for a buzzing day.

Ticked all these off your list? You must be pretty exhausted! Rest your weary head at one of our Melbourne hotels and rejuvenate, relax and recuperate!
