6 Things to do in Hobart in Rain, Hail or Shine

The Hobart attractions and activities you can’t miss when you next visit Tasmania, regardless of the Hobart weather.

The best way to prepare for Hobart’s changing weather conditions is to have the perfect mix of indoor and outdoor activities lined up. Here are some of our top recommendations on what to do in Hobart when you want to get among the elements - or shield yourself from them!

Indoor Attractions

No matter what the weather in Hobart is like, these Tassie activities and destinations will keep you sheltered from the elements. Perfect for year-round visitation.
1. Immerse yourself in the magic and madness of MONA
A trip to Hobart at any time is incomplete without visiting MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art. It’s Australia’s biggest privately owned museum, and is unlike any other you would have visited before.
MONA is only 15 minutes from the city if you’re driving or a comfortable 30 minute trip on the ferry where you can choose from the ‘posh pit’ with canapes and complimentary drinks in the lounge and private deck or ‘cattle class’.
When you arrive, venture underground to be immersed in what the museum’s owner, David Walsh describes as a “subversive adult Disneyland”. Bring an open mind as you explore the thought-provoking and at times controversial collection of art.
2. Sample Tasmania’s finest spirits
Tasmania’s boutique spirits industry is continuing to boom. Your time in Hobart, Tasmania is well spent by soaking up the atmosphere and sampling local spirits as you visit one of the city’s bars or cellar doors. Visit Lark Distillery and Cellar Door by the Hobart waterfront or drive 15 minutes out of the CBD and take a tour of the Sullivan’s Cove Distillery – home to one of the leading whiskies in the world. Sullivan’s Cove have tours running on the hour, although it’s best to book ahead to avoid disappointment.
3. Tour Australia’s oldest operational brewery
If beer’s more your thing, Cascade Brewery cannot be missed. Learn more about Australia’s oldest, still operating brewery and expand your brewing knowledge on a guided tour.
Choose from a classic brewery tour which will take you behind the scenes to learn more about Cascade’s approach to brewing, followed by a tasting; the Cascade Story Tour where you will learn about the heroes and villains of Cascade over the years or a historical play that will take you back to the 1800s to meet the wife of Cascade founder Peter Degraves.

Outdoor Activities

4. Stroll the aisles of Salamanca Market
Start your Saturday with a stroll around the stalls of the Salamanca market. There are hundreds of small stalls to check out, selling various produce (sourced locally of course), handmade artisan wares, gourmet foodie products and more.
Pick out a souvenir to remember your travels, a gift for a loved one back home or simply some scrumptious snacks to enjoy while you have a wander!
5. Explore Mount Wellington Park
Mount Wellington is perched right next to the city of Hobart, so visitors and locals alike are lucky to experience the beauty of both the city and nature within close proximity. Offering a range of activities at various times of the year, from bush walking and family friendly barbecue spots to scenic lookouts, horse trails, bike riding and even 4WD tracks for the adventurous driver.
Be sure to check the weather report and do your research, as what you can do on your visit may vary depending on the season and conditions. If you’re an early bird, getting out of bed early to drive up to the Pinnacle and watch the sunrise over Hobart.
6. Take your adventure to new heights at Tahune Airwalk
If you’re up for a drive out of town the Tahune Airwalk is a memorable experience. Soar over the Huon River as you fly on the Cable Eagle Hang Glider or trek among the treetops and feel like you’re walking on air as you explore the Airwalk.
If you’re visiting in the wintertime look out for seasonal specials that allow you to experience both the Eagle Hang Gliding and Airwalk for a reduced price. Arrive first thing to beat the crowds and get the perfect happy snap at the cantilever (the lookout at the end) to remember your visit and make your friends and family back home jealous!
