Arriving at reception: the person behind reception was entirely silent and did not welcome me to the hotel and very quietly asked how he could help, no smile. Only after I started friendly conversation did his manner change and he became very friendly and welcoming. I was tired after a long journey and I wish I'd had a better welcome. My room: There is a large wet patch on the floor outside the bedroom, but as I was so tired I just put a towel over this (it was soaked by morning). The toilet did not flush once during my stay, and after my bath, the water in the sink ran dry. I reported this to reception who said that they were aware and that they had 'hoped' the situation would be fixed by now (apparently some work had taken place in the basement). No apology or offer to help or switch rooms. By checkout, the toilet still wouldn't flush although the water was back on in the sink. At night, I had to brush my teeth using a bottle of fizzy water I had in my room. The bed, heating, amenities and layout of the room were all wonderful and I got a great sleep. Breakfast: All staff were lovely, the breakfast was decent too. Checkout: Was fast and really pleasant although I wasn't asked if I had enjoyed my stay. I didn't feel like I could raise the toilet issue again as I just got the impression it wouldn't matter. The hotel really has an unloved air about it, it's sad. It was very busy but I didn't feel like I engaged with the atmosphere. Staff are demotivated I think.

The hotel is bright, comfortable and friendly and has it's own carpark. It's location is convenient for the beach, the theatre and shops. Our spacious, en-suite room had a sea view. The dinner menu offered a good variety of dishes and the service was nice. With a fitness suite and pool, on the premises, our 2-day holiday was excellent value for money.

Hotel tired in places but in midst of refurbishment.stayed in refurbished room with great views, staff were lovely, food was good, spa area needs refurbished but it was ok, drinks at bar were bit expensive but just went to local pubs. Hotel close to shops, beach and good base for travelling to local attractions. Thoroughly enjoyed our short break and will def book again

Room was clean, facilities OK. The milk for tea and coffee in my room was off (little pots) which was a bit horrible. Shower was underwhelming, and had difficulty getting any decent temperature but managed.

It was well below expectations , the food was awful, the accommodation was dated and tired there was a hole in the roof on our floor were the water and wind was coming through , I would go to a premier inn in a heartbeat next time .. I couldn’t believe how below par the hotel was I was very disappointed!!! I expect so much more than what was given , it was our anniversary and were were meeting friends from Crofthead caravan park and we choose the hotel for a bit of luxury but unfortunately we were let down.

Not too friendly a reception when we arrived then I was asked for payment yet when I booked, I had to pay immediately. I still need to wait for my credit card statement to come through so see if I have now paid twice. The rooms were disappointing - very basic. The safe didn't work either. Windows in bedroom were very draughty and there was a whole in the ceiling in the corridor outside our room. The evening meal was very enjoyable though - the food was lovely. The breakfast was OK.

The room which had just been refurbished was superb with a supersize king bed, meals were basic but good, service was faultless, enjoyed leisure facilities- overall a superb weeks stay would highly recommend and will definitely look forward to many more future stays.

First impressions count and we did not relish having to wade through a mountain of cigarette butts to get through the door, disgusting! Got to reception to a not so warm and friendly greeting but hey, we all have bad days. We were a little early to check in so went and had a drink and panini in the bar, ok so far, apart from the pungent smell of what we think was some kind of cleaning fluid, very overpowering. Went back to reception to check in, paid an extra £25 per night (so £50) to upgrade to a privilege room, room 363. My heart sank, it was grim and depressing and we felt like we didn’t want to touch anything never mind sleep there! I went back to reception and asked if that was the best room they could do because if it was we’d just have the double room we booked and I’d have my £50 back. We were shown a double room which was every bit as grim then was taken up to the next floor by the housekeeper to see room 463. This was fractionally better than 363 but in the middle of a building site. We decided to make the best of a bad job and took 463. Now, we are not unreasonable people and we know that work has to be carried out but why, when I rang to book on the 19th August at 14.30 and spoke to Diago was this not mentioned? I have looked at the website and can’t find any mention of a refurb there either. Like previously stated we are not unreasonable but whilst the work is ongoing and they are trying to put people into substandard rooms surely this should be reflected in the price. There wasn’t even any bottled water or tissues in the room. We did make use of the pool, at our own risk......this urgently needs an upgrade! In the shower afterwards there is absolutely nowhere to put or hang anything, very inconvenient. On the plus side, buffet breakfast was ok, the majority of the staff were very pleasant and the hotel location is great. I’m sure it’ll be lovely when it’s all been refurbished but until then book at your own risk!” Read less Date of stay: August 2019 Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished one.

Disasterous romantic birthday break for partner

Really disappointing stay to say the least, asked if there was anything hotel could do as this was for my partners birthday, nothing done for us at all, I did say I would pay to have even Peroni in the room, there was nothing. Breakfast 1st very poor, came downstairs at 9.20am, supposedly on until 10am, almost everything had run out & didn't seem to be getting replaced even after commenting on the lack of hot food. A nice "romantic break" or so we thought, another room decided to host a party in their room (including an accordion) till waaaaay after 1am, I did phone reception to complain, I'm all for everyone enjoying themselves, but isn't this what the bar is for? Dinner on the Saturday night was nice, the sweet potato & carrot soup was amazing, the sticky toffee pudding however had been microwaved within an inch of it's life, which I did comment on when it was collected (no apology, or would I prefer something else). Breakfast on the Sunday was on until 11am, went down at 9.30am & there did seem to be more, although they were still not very quick at replacing items. Bin in toilet had not been emptied from previous guests. Room 668 was lovely, very spacious, tastefully decorated, huge comfy bed, with a great view of the sea & Isle of Arran (just a shame the weather was not on our side). Check-out was a nightmare, we were booked on a Dinner on one night (with wine) bed & breakfast, both days, I also upgraded to a privilege room, but was told we were only booked on a bed & breakfast rate, which was extremely embarrassing at the desk with a queue behind, I had to logon to get my confirmation email, I mean I'd paid £129.00 + the upgrade of another £40.00, extremely disappointed & put a real dampener on the birthday weekend

It was ok rather than good,few things were not as we usually have at Mercure.Dinner was disgusting ,very greasy fish and a few thin frozen chips,wifi was very intermittent, toilet bin was full from previous guest,no coffee for machine (yes I could have asked ),A few things I know but just seemed they all added up to a stay that was for our anniversary
