Do not stay here, Save yourselves the disappointment.

I won a competition last year & one of the prizes was a complimentary nights stay at this hotel, I foolishly paid & wasted £181 for the extra night for an extra night to enjoy my time in london with my mum, had I known what a disappointing stay it would be, I wouldn’t have bothered claiming my prize at all and I certainly wouldn’t have made my mum endure such a horrible experience. We arrived at the hotel on the Sunday afternoon, I rang the hotel to get clear directions as I didn’t receive anything from the hotel and we had never been to that area, we didn’t want to waste money on a taxi if it was only a short walk, I couldn’t understand the receptionist & she couldn’t give me clear directions to the hotel. We eventually arrived at the hotel, the lobby was clean & bright, we made our way to the second floor & to be honest I was hoping for a nice room, comfortable and big enough for two people to move around in. Sadly the room we got was awful, it was tiny and it was certainly not big enough for two people and not worth the money, even worse was, we were faced with brick walls and the added unpleasant noise of the hotels heating/cooling units underneath our window. We could not even open the window for any fresh air. The bathroom was cold even with the radiator on and the door shut. We had twin beds and were the most uncomfortable beds we’ve ever slept on, they had toppers on, why we do not know, both beds were a big lumpy lopsided mess, 2 awful nights sleep & a mediocre breakfast in the morning, nice selection of food, all quite hot if up early enough, nothing to get excited about. On one evening outside the hotel my mother fell over on the pavement right outside the restaurant hurting her hands & knees, she was lucky she did not injure herself seriously. Why is there is a stupid bump (which isn’t noticeable especially in the dark) when the rest of this pavement area outside the restaurant is flat? This is dangerous & someone could really injure themselves. We were extremely disappointed that we were not made aware when booking our stay that the hotel bar and restaurant would be closed on both Sunday & Monday nights. It is appalling that this information was not given. Our stay was disappointing, uncomfortable & not worth the money, complete rip off, we wish we could erase from our minds. Do not stay here waste your money or time here, there are far better, more comfortable hotels/b&bs. This hotel will make your soul sore.

Good location but disappointing state of the room (aircon controls, bad bed mattress, poorly located electrical outlets)

While the location of the hotel is excellent, and the staff service very good there is some serious fixes to be made to the room comfort itself - the mattress was in a very bad shape (not level - feet were higher than the head and the mattress board was worn out giving an excessively springy and unstable feel on the bed - very uncomfortable sleep and bad for the back). The room temperature controls were completely defective - the control would randomly shut itself off or reset itself to 21 deg C or randomly start and stop and change temperature at any point of the day or night - this absolutely needs to be fixed. Finally - all electrical outlets (3 of them) are located at the far end of the room near the desk or above the minibar fridge - there are no outlets at all near the bed head or the side table - very inconvenient if one wants to use his phone while charging at night as a bedside clock and alarm.

Dear Stephane L., Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. While I wish you had a better experience, it is feedback like this that we learn from and use to improve. We work hard to deliver an exceptional guest experience, and it's apparent in this case that we fell short. The Mercure is well located close to Holborn and Russell Square stations and the British Museum. The hotel is clean and comfortable but is in need of some renovations. The paint in our room had been noticeably touched up and the bathroom door was water damaged. Not big things but for the price expected a bit more luxury.
