Faded elegance with a good SPA

I stayed at the hotel for 4 nights with a young family and the start was not fantastic. I used their travel service to book a taxi from my Riad in Marrakech to Essaouira however, it did not turn up and I received no communication from the hotel. Staff at my Riad rang for an hour to speak to reception and eventually they got through and confirmed that the hotel had failed to book it, so I had to make alternative arrangements. When I did arrive at the Le Médina Essaouira Thalassa, the staff were most apologetic and compensated me adequately for the inconvenience. The hotel itself is superbly situated minutes from the medina and port. I could see how grand the hotel was in the past but there are cracks now showing and most of the hotel needs a facelift to gain back its former glory. That said, the rooms were of a good size (though my TV worked sporadically and the shower temperature routinely fluctuated). Breakfast had lots of choice in a nice restaurant location. We ate dinner at the Mbeach restaurant that overlooked the beach and the seafood tajine was particularly good. Both my wife and I had massages and used the Spa and felt it was the best part of the hotel. Overall, a very lovely stay and the staff were very friendly when they were not rushing about. I would happily stay again there in the future.

This is our 6th time at this hotel and overall it’s a great experience evidenced by us returning. All the communal areas are spotless with lots of places to sit and beautiful flowers. The rooms are a bit dated but are nicely done out and very comfortable. The room service is excellent with a twice daily service. The laundry service is superb. The pool in the centre of the hotel is cleaned every day, as are the sun beds. A visit to the spa is also well worth it. The stand out team is the breakfast one and they quickly learn your preferences. It’s a well located hotel right on the beach, with a beach bar and restaurant and private beach. It’s an easy walk to both the new and the old medina with lots of restaurants and don’t forget to check out Taros bar for sunset. The negatives They are completely incapable to be relied upon for taxis to and from the airport- we tried this time for the second time this year to no avail. A large tour group of Italians arrived during our week stay. They were loud, rude and aggressive. Added to which our room was above the restaurant/ breakfast room. Don’t expect an early night when groups are here. Our room. Disappointed doesn’t cover it. The noise see above. Gets the least sun on that side. No room upgrade (we know they were busy). We are PLATINUM members but you wouldn’t think that from this room allocation.

Terrible experience, very outdated building, poor quality and pricey breakfast. Rooms full of dust (I could not sleep the night). Very rude staff, one of them even said ‘french only’ as she did not speak English. Horrible experience! Choose something better, with proper hospitality services and decent rooms/facilities. I think there are some Riad in the medina of Essaouria, I would go for a good one of them.

Superb staff in this hotel make the holiday experience so worthwhile. Across every area the staff work so hard. This hotel is close to the city Medina so all the restaurants and shops are easily accessible. The rooms are large and well equipped. As Essaouira becomes more popular, the bathroom area needs to be updated to reflect a more modern clientele. The pool area and hydro therapy areas are excellent. Breakfast is plentiful, with the option to eat outside. Good restaurant belonging to the hotel is by the beach. We will certainly return to this hotel.

It's the small details and care that matters ..l just popped in at midnight as lwas cycling with low blood sugar . I was in bad condition and the lady at front desk rushed to help me with kindness and a smile she ran and got me a coca cola and some sweets .l rested at lobby for some time and we had a little chat ..thank Madam kenza you saved my life ..this is hospitality that goes beyond margins and profits Ex accor executive chef M.fawzi al barazi
