The Novotel on Darling Harbour reminded me of an aging Hollywood icon - doing almost anything to appear relevant and sexy, except being themselves and doing what they used to do best. It was the little things, like cracks in the make-up on an over botoxed face. Lousy packets of instant coffee; the restaurant that was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, the cockroach on the bathroom wall... Once one of the jewels on Darling Harbour, this hotel may be approaching the end of its career. The enormous hole in the ground and construction going on between the Novotel and the Harbour (where a 40+ storey monstrosity is being built) is not only a reminder of the future, but a pain when trying to get to the hotel from the Pyrmont Bridge side. Like.the aging icon, Novotel is taking on bit parts, hosting conferences for increasingly obscure industry groups. The glimpses of style and grandeur are still around, and the staff are exceptional. The location is perfect for the Sydney visitor,.despite the hole in the ground. I can't complain about Novotel and the service we received, I just feel sad.

We stayed last month at the busiest time this year, during Taylor Swift and Blink 182 concerts. That said, service was slow, checkin ridiculous, and the rooms were very tired and dated. I used to stay here every trip to Sydney, but changed to a CBD hotel once the mono rail disappeared. Our first room air con didn't work, and it was a good two days before I could see my way clear to reception to let them know. We were eventually shifted to another room that didn't have views, but did have air con. The pool area was a BIG problem. The top rung of the ladder at the pool was completely missing, but I didn't realise this until I overbalanced, leading to me 'falling' into the water. I am 65 with balance issues. When it came time for me to get out, I texted my son to come help me as there was no way I was getting out alone. With the top step of ladder missing it was way too hard, and the only other steps had no hand rail and were too deep for me to get out. So anyway, as my son was helping me out of the pool, the worst thing happened and I did fall heavily, hurting my knee and ankle and grazing both knees. I informed the manager of what had happened and why, and asked to do an incident report. The manager was more interested in talking to the Swifts that were present than a guest that was injured. He sent his 2IC (I think) up to check on me and he made sure I was ok and put antiseptic on the grazes. I asked again for the incident report. Eventually I got a phone call from hotel saying that the incident reports are all online and I don't need to sign anything? Sounds weird to me. I really hope they have fixed this issue as it was an awful experience for me. Reception, was ridiculous. People were pushing in, and then getting served, I had to wait in line so many times to just get some water, get my key sorted that didn't work, various other issues. The phone rang out if trying to call down to guest services and reception is often deserted in the evening. Can't ring and can't face to face, what good is 24 hour reception??? The surrounds are awful with the demolishing of Harbourside and machines and dust going on at all times. Thankfully no noise. Walking back to the hotel from the tram line, there was a putrid stench in the novotel car park area every day. Made me want to vomit. Not sure if anything to do with the darling harbour refurb but it sticks. For those with mobility issues, the lift only takes you up to the 3rd floor and then there is a ramp further up to get up to the hotel. It's a decent hike. Other aspects were to do with my ALL and Accor Plus membership. At Novotel Sydney on Darling Harbour, there seems to be a BIG push going on for people to join the program ALL. Well, I have been an ALL member for decades, and an A+ member for a couple of years now. I was disappointed that the loyalty was overlooked amid the rush of "oh our hotel is fully booked yeehah" attitude, and my request for a high room was ignored, as were all of my preferences on my profile. just one bottle of water, a bottle of cheap wine (which I don't drink) and no real recognition of loyalty to the ACCOR program. This seems to be totally random and just dependant on who is doing what at the time, and what they decide to acknowledge. When I was a silver member I was put on top floor in a beautiful room many times, but here we are now...4th floor. Some members say they are well looked after, others are ignored. I am a platinum member, and I find this very disappointing. It leads to people NOT wanting to come back to your hotel. The Ternary. It is simply WONDERFUL. Fantastic food, great service, could not ask for more, I will be back to celebrate my 66th Birthday when I am next in town. Huge range of alco and non alco cocktails and bug range of other drinks. Breakfast was fabulous too, with special care towards dietary requirements. Or breakfast boxes were fabulous, thank you, leaving at 5am is no joke. We appreciated them. Please do not say "we are sorry this visit did not meet your expectations", just take the feedback on board please

My sister and I stayed at the Novotel hotel between 4th – 10th March. We were both disappointed with the accommodation. The bathroom was tired and we could tell that any cracks that had occurred in the grout and tiling had just been patched in, making the room look worn and in need of an update (the shower itself needed an updated, there was no detachable shower head and with the bath being non-slip, we were both cautious when we went for a wash in case of a slip). We had left the card on our room doorknob outside to indicate that we wanted our room cleaned. We had seen that the floor we were in had been serviced multiple times a day so we were sure we would come back to a clean room. We got back after being out for 6 hours to find that our room hadn’t been cleaned. We left our room to be cleaned another day when we were out and came back to our room not clean either. As a result, we had to go down to reception to ask for amenities we had run out of. When we got to the hotel room and logged onto the WIFI, we were surprised to find that we had to pay for WIFI. There was no other option. It stated we had to pay $10 a day. After a look on the website, we could see that the amenities the hotel offers is that they offer free WIFI. We rang reception to inquire about this and were told that since we are members the Accor group, the amount would be wiped from our accent once we left. I feel that with a much often used tool such as WIFI, it should be stated on the website and the other websites that are advertising this hotel, so others are aware of this. When we went down the hotel breakfast, we found that the food was cold, lukewarm at best. This was a disappointment to us as the hotel breakfast is one of the parts of the trip we looked forward to. As a result, we choice not to have some breakfast items as the hot food was not hot at all. We thought this was a timing issue so we got up right when breakfast was starting, but found the same issue.
