A perfect midtown luxury hotel for theater-goers

My friend and I (both seniors) have stayed at nearly every hotel on W 44th street and the Sofitel is our favorite. We won't stay anywhere else after having found this spot. We've stayed twice and if anything, our recent stay was even better than the first. Perfect mid-town location for theater-goers like us, walking distance to excellent restaurants (Lantanzzi's and Il Corso for italian, Acdeniz for mediterranean, Lolita for mexican---avoid the Red Flame diner for breakfast), friendly staff, nice on-site restaurant/bar, quiet rooms that are big for NYC, large bathrooms with separate tub/shower and wide vanities, heavy robes, wonderful pillows. comfy bed, down comforters, etc. What more could you ask for? Yes, the decor might be considered "dated", but that didn't bother us at all. Yes, it's pricey, but not much different than other nice hotels in the area (e.g., Algonquin, Iriquois). We were satisfied with the basic queen room. My friend was on the 6th floor and I was on the 12th, and both rooms were quiet since 44th is not a busy street, so don't be afraid of getting a lower floor room or one facing the street. One thing to note, like in most of the hotels on W. 44th, the rooms don't get much light, so prepare for it to be dark. We can hardly wait to return for our annual trip to the city.

I have stayed at a Sofitel before in Marrakesh, which was an amazing experience, so my expectations were high! Unfortunately the NY Sofitel isn’t what I would call a luxury 5 star hotel. The staff were friendly especially the doorman. But it’s very rundown, the public areas look nice but the luxury twin room on the 15th floor was very tired. Be aware the mini bar is empty and there is no tea and coffee facilities in the room. You can get complimentary tea and coffee from the bar in the morning to take away but no one told us that, so only found out towards the end of the week. On a more positive note, the beds were very comfortable and the location was good.

Excellent location - refreshment needed

We had 6 nights in Sofitel - we took a suite for 3 people (average of $700 per night for accor members). The location is great the staff is nice but such a price for such a suite - needs to Be refreshed and modernized - look at the pictures - no minibar working water under this one, unplugged cable behind tv, painting with white paints, no coffee machine, no usb at bed lights, only one lavabo, all these things we need for this category of hotel we don’t have… It was not our first time here but certainly our last…

Just had 5 nights at sofitel nyc. Early check in at 9.30am after red eye 🙂 Upgrade to high floor 🙂 Two drink vouchers - that can be used for Verve in the bar 🙂🙂 (ALL member) Welcome plate of French pastries with welcome note 🙂 Two waters with chocolate left in room daily 🙂 Free breakfast on weekends included in package in Gaby Bistro - a la carte and pretty much order what ever you like! The friendliest staff from doorman to concierge (helpful with directions and suggestions), room attendant (who checked in on us after earthquake just to see we were ok!) 🙂 Gaby Brasserie staff - all of them but particularly weekend breakfast Hostess and waitstaff Great gym (although did it use as we walked 20,000k steps everyday) Great location and plenty of good food options in 44th and 45th street. I literally can’t fault it. Granted though it’s an older property that’s been ‘renovated’ but great size rooms for NYC. Quick lifts. Beautiful towels and the comfiest beds. If anything lets it down - no minibar (but empty fridge in room)and amenities in room light on for a Sofitel. Side note - we caught the bus for $18 from Newark airport and train for $15 to JFK and both were super easy.

The hotel has lost it’s way

This hotel has certainly lost its way 5* NO WAY 3.5* possibly No longer;- 1.Papers in the Lobby and on each floor by the lifts 2.A large bowl of green apples in the Lounge 3.No kettle in the room 4. blankets in the room 5. Two pairs of slippers, only one. 6.Flowers in the bathroom 7.A candle and matches in the bathroom 8.Any drinks in the mini bar 9.A turn down service 10. Pens at the checkin/ checkout desks 11. Drinks vouchers for use in the Bar or Restaurant- usually given to regularly returning guests A deposit of USD 150 is deducted up front for each nights stay BUT no notice given that such deductions are to be made !!! When inquiry was subsequently made the answer was that deductions were to cover “ incidental expenses” ! The hotel is quite soulless 1.
