85 rooms, contemporary styling, in a converted former Rex cinema. Choose this if you want bustling-city-centre, easy public-transport-accessibility Accor type hospitality . Recently I spent several nights at this property, during the month of April 2024. Convenient location a few minutes walk from the main train station (Firenze-Santa Maria Novella), and even closer to the Unita tram stop from the airport ( around 20 minutes travel time from airport via T2 tram). The Mercure Centro Firenze is barely visible on the street! It has just 2 discrete doors to the street on the left side as you come from the train station. There is a small sign on the building. Much of the ground floor of the old building is a clothing store so you might not notice that there is an hotel above it, because the ugly frontage of the old cinema remains in place (signage mentions Apollo Rex). The Mercure Centro hotel is near the start of a narrow, traffic choked, one-way street (Via Nazionale) that teems with life, graffiti, litter, homeless people, and beggars. But despite these bustling surroundings the hotel is calm and pleasant inside. The hotel is just moments away on foot from principal Florence tourist sites especially the Central Market, and San Lorenzo, and the Chapel of the Princes, and less than 15 minutes walk from most other attractions like the Duomo and San Marco etc. The hotel is convenient for several local bus routes, for those that need local-buses (for example the bus 7 to Fiesole, and also close to the bus 12 to Galileo-San-Miniato for another great viewpoint, or the bus to Settignano. Also the main bus station of Florence is a short walk, from where you can get regional/longer-distance buses to other Tuscan locations if they are not served by trains. Buy your local or regional bus tickets either from the multi-lingual machines or also at the manned ticket office(english spoken) at the Autostazione (bus station). There are two supermarkets a few meters from the door of the hotel, a Conad, and a Carrefour-Express. There are also many small fast food places, coffee stops etc, everything you might expect in a city centre. My room was a so-called privilege room, 24 square meters, with a balcony the full width of the room, and it overlooked a courtyard. It was quiet, but otherwise a typical chracterless minimalist box, and everything worked. There was a large flat screen TV that had internet connectivity, a bluetooth speaker, a nespresso machine, an electric-kettle, and a refrigerator that offered free water, cola, juice, refreshed daily. The housekeeping was discrete. The room safe was OK, old design but it was not burgled. The room as clean. The bathroom was comfortable. The disadvantages of the hotel are few, but I list them below. (1) The weekday breakfast starts at 7am, and Sat/Sunday breakfast at 07:30. This seems rather late (for early risers), and I prefer a 06:00AM breakfast on weekdays and 06:30AM at weekends. Breakfast buffet itself is simple, nothing special. Mostly cold stuff, as Italians tend not to like northern european heavy cooked breakfasts. The hotel staff don't seem to be able to cook scrambled eggs properly! The Italian sausages were tiny but tasty. The breakfast room is awkward to reach, involving steps that initially are up, then down and around corners! (2) Another strange thing is that the lifts/elevators are unprotected in the sense that no room-keypass (in 2024) is needed to operate the elevator which seems somewhat less secure that other big-city-hotels. The room had a safe large enough to store a laptop. However, many of those centralised room-keypass systems are already hacked. I did see CCTV cameras in the corridors outside the elevator, but do not know if they are always operating. (3) Rooms facing the courtyard may experience noise of rubbish-clearance (trash trucks etc) around 6am each morning, but this did not bother me as I rise early anyway. Like all 4-star properties in Florence , it is very expensive especially in peak season.

Extremely well located in the city center, you enter in a warm and cosy hotel. I appreciated a lot that it was quiet, really well cleaned and with a lovely staff! The room was spacious, comfortable and the mini bar is included in the price. I also enjoyed the breakfast, particularly the local pastries which are highlighted by the hotel with a sign "local". I find this to be a great initiative! I would like to mention Valentina, the front office manager, who has been of a great help for my booking, thank you very much Valentina!

Arrived late at night and got a huge help from Sonja. Best receptionist i’ve ever met, extremely friendly with our check in and helped us with reservations at local restaurants. Another shout out to Sonja.

Let’s start with the reservation process. I received an email confirmation regarding my upcoming stay. I sent an email to the hotel inquiring where to park my rental car. Much to my delight the hotel returned my email question. The hotel’s email contained detailed directions about which streets I should take to get to the hotel, and the parking garage/car-park. This was extremely helpful. Upon check-in, we were greeted by a warm and friendly staff. Checking was fast and efficient. We were told about breakfast times and location. The staff informed us that if we gave them an hour's notice the next day, the car would be delivered to the hotel. This was an excellent service. The streets are very difficult to drive on in the area around the hotel. The hotel is quiet, and the rooms are well-appointed. The breakfast contained a nice selection of hot food items to choose from. A large selection of rolls, bread, cold-cut meats, fruit, and cheeses were available. The hotel is in a great location. Walking distance from most places that you will want to see. Our room had a balcony. Worth the upgrade.
