Superb location, couldn’t fault that, right next to Winchester Cathedral and a few minutes walk from the shops, restaurants and pubs. Car park on site (chargeable at £15 a night) however it is a tight car park with not many spaces, so come with an alternative option during peak season. Check in was okay, receptionist could have been a bit more informative as did not tell us what time or where breakfast was or bar/restaurant opening times, came back later in the day and someone else gave us the information. Arthur in the bar was fab, very attentive and can tell he enjoys his job- an asset to your team. Rooms were clean, bed comfy, however the hotel and rooms are looking very tired now, and it could do with a refurb.

I’m so glad that you had an enjoyable time during your stay at The Mercure Hotel Winchester Wessex. We just changed all our bedroom carpet and curtains. We are now painting the last few bedrooms and then we will start with the public areas. First come, first served parking is available and when our carpark is full there is a public carpark across the road. We hope we can welcome you back to the property in the near future.

Great service. Received upgrade to superior room with views of the cathedral. The first room had a stench of tobacco smoke so we were moved with no quibble after I asked for room spray. Comfortable beds, clean room, clean but aging bathroom. Fridge in the room with water and fruit juice with a great selection of teas and coffee. Parking £15 per night but secure. Breakfast plentiful

Stayed lots of times previously and the hotel staff are always professional and helpful. Room choices are good, always clean and comfortable. Would certainly recommend - especially given the location, which is central Winchester and opposite the beautiful cathedral.

I was staying at the Mercure Winchester Wessex Hotel for a conference. It was worth taking some time to look around Winchester as it is a excellent location with a fascinating history. The good things at the hotel were the morning breakfast (cereals, continental, and cooked) , polite staff, the central location and a lovely view of the cathedral from the window. I recommend a visit to the cathedral as it must be one of the most wonderful historical buildings in the whole of the UK. However, the sink in my en suite bathroom was partly blocked, there was a slight smell of body odour in the room and there were a few dim lamps but no main lighting in the room. There was no central heating, just a small heater that I was advised to use to keep the room warm. Also, beware - you have to pay for parking at the hotel if you drive. It is £15 for every 24 hours. Overall, though the central location is a good thing, I was expecting more for my money. If the room had more modern features then it would justify the price for the four star rating. Winchester is a wonderful place though.

Such a shame that this hotel is really run down and actually a bit of a dump. It has the most stunning location overlooking the cathedral but is let down by the hard product which is seriously overdue a closing of the doors for a multi million pound refit. The carpets in the communal areas are dated and worn. The room was okay and in fairness I had a comfortable night’s sleep but it was like staying at your grandma’s in terms of fixtures and furnishings, and that’s probably an insult to your grandma. The biggest let down was the bathroom which was actually not clean. I was only staying the night and spent most of my time out in Winchester. But it’s highly unlikely I will return to this hotel. I found myself looking out the window and wishing I’d booked the travelodge over the road that I stayed in the weekend before. Mercure get a grip and get some investment in this place!!!
