Nestled in the south of Sumatera Island, Palembang is a busy port city founded on Indonesia’s Musi River. A major trade centre, Palembang has direct connections to Medan, Batam, Padang, Jakarta as well as Singapore. However, there is much more to Palembang than exporting. The region's rich landmarks make for fascinating holiday site-seeing. Take a scenic steam boat ride along the mighty Musi River, admire the classic craftsmanship of Limas Traditional House, explore over 2,000 relics and antiques at the State Museum, relax on the white sandy beaches of Pulau Bangka, and watch in wonder at the 90m high Tenang Waterfall. Palembang is also famous for its shopping. Pasar 16 Ilir is a multi storey bazaar that features the traditional Palembang textile called Songket, which can be found in everything from clothes, purses, cushion covers, calligraphy to handicrafts. Don’t forget to try Palembang’s famous Pempek fish cakes. But be warned, you won’t be able to stop at just one!
