| | Arcachon, a lovely resort on the shores of a small sea inlet, proves a particularly wonderful place to just take it easy.
Basin and ocean Between the tranquil basin with its fine sandy beaches and the restless Atlantic pounding the sandy coast, relax and enjoy lazy holiday activities: sunbathing, biking along the seafront, excursions in a fishing smack.
Life in the dunes After the beach clubs close for the night, treat yourself to a platter of oysters cultivated on the Ile aux Oiseaux (Bird Island). For a dazzling end to the day, watch the flamboyant sunset over the dunes while listening to a live jazz concert. |

| | Picnic at low tide Bring your boat aground at the foot of the cabins on stilts (cabanes tchanquées) and feast on the picnic you brought along. These cabins are the symbol of the Arcachon basin, though there are only two !
At the top of the dune Pyla Dune is the biggest sand dune in Europe. Climb the hundred or so meters to the top for a magnificent view of the mouth of the basin, the ocean and the Landes pine forest.
Scoop and net in hand As the tide ebbs and flows, cockles, clams, crayfish and other shellfish get deposited in the sand. Hit the beach and compose your own fresh seafood platter! |
