Plaza de Mayo This is the soul of the city. Built by the Spanish in the 16th century, it is bordered by colonial buildings. Inside the cathedral, decorated with paintings by Rubens, is the mausoleum of General San Martin, the hero of Argentinean independence.
Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar In a brilliant mix of influences, features of this 18th-century Franciscan church include the Andalusian white façade, Tuscan pilasters, and an altar with Peruvian silver. |

| | Plaza de los Dos Congresos This beautiful square is dominated by the magnificent Palacio del Congreso National. You must come here at night, when people are out to get some fresh air, eating a pizza or an ice cream, near the fountain. Ornamented with horses and cherubs, it is an object of curiosity: notes of music can be heard as the water flows.
La Boca Friezes, brightly colored façades and painted houses made of tin and materials recovered from abandoned ships - this old port area is now the hangout of artists. At night, the streets come to life and couples form for yet another tango. |
