| | Entirely rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, the "lower town" resembles a giant chessboard. But it is still the commercial heart of the city.
Praça do Comércio Lined with yellow buildings and formerly the site of the royal palace, the square leads to an embarcadero on the Tagus and to the Baixa through a triumphal arch. Wander down the pedestrian Rua Augusta then stop for a special coffee at the Casa Macàrio.
Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao Velha Miraculously, the church's façade and portal survived the earthquake. The elaborate Manueline ornamentation is simply amazing. |

Take the "Elevador" In Rua Santa Justa, take the "machine to visit the moon." Built by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, it lets you contemplate the most beautiful view of Baixa.
Cocktail hour Stop for a "Ginginha," a drink made from a cherry-like fruit. It's a pre-dinner ritual. |
