Tips for Visiting Northampton Cricket Ground

One of Northampton’s most beloved event spaces, Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is situated in the very heart of the town. 

The County Ground is home to an arena, as well as several suites and a series of function rooms, each one boasting a panoramic view of the picturesque grounds. If you’re visiting the County Ground for a private event, a performance, or to enjoy a match in the sun, there are a couple of things that can help enhance your trip. 

Here, we’ll look at how to get there, and some of the best places to eat and drink near the County Cricket Ground. So you can make the most of your visit. Finally, we’ll share some of our hotels closest to the ground. 

Originally the home of Northampton Town FC, the Northampton Cricket Ground is now used by Northamptonshire County Cricket Club or NCCC. 

Northampton Cricket Club was founded in 1820. Matches between ‘Town’ and ‘County’ teams attracted big crowds, and the club set up its home on Northampton Racecourse. Over the next two centuries, the club would go from strength to strength. The new, purpose-built ground was chosen and first played on in 1886. NCCC has won lots of trophies and championships there in the years since. 

The County Ground couldn’t be easier to access. If you’re travelling by car, take Junction 15 from the M1, and follow the A508 towards Northampton. The ground is just a few miles away. It can be accessed from two points – via Abington Avenue for the Indoor Cricket Centre, or via Wantage Road for the Pavillion Rooms. 

Buses pass between Northampton Bus Station and the County Ground every ten minutes. Simply hop on at the station, and off again at the stop outside Abington Public House. From there, it’s less than one minute’s walk to the ground. 

If you’re taking the train to Northampton, you can enjoy a 30-40-minute stroll from Northampton Train Station to the County Ground. If you’d prefer to save your energy for your event, you can jump in a taxi outside the station and be at the ground in around five minutes. 

There’s an abundance of food and drink available at The County Ground, so you’ll be spoilt for choice even if your event isn’t catered. Concession stands offer delicious burgers, Indian cuisine, and ice cream. However, we recommend you make the most of your visit by grabbing a bite in a local restaurant before you head into the ground. 

Try The Royal Oak, a traditional English pub that’s known around Northampton for its homemade pies and wholesome food. There’s a beautiful garden and kids play area outside, so you can enjoy a drink in the sun and prepare for your visit to The County Ground in style.
