"An average stay"

Our stay was not up to the standard we usually receive at a Mercure. On arrival, the receptionist was on auto-pilot, asking us how we wanted to pay having just told us the room was pre-paid. No mention at check-in of the need to book a restaurant table resulted in a 1 1/2 hour delay when we went to the restaurant, until the manager stepped in and found us a table immediately. The food was average, with a paltry offering of two very small pieces of bread and some low quality olive oil at a ridiculous price followed by fried fish with soggy batter. And to cap it all, a large Christmas tree had been erected in the entrance foyer in mid-September - we thought we had entered a time-warp!

Nice location, just beside with Golden Acre Park, with plenty of space to walks, bycicle rides and childs' play.In some hot days at summer, as there isn't any air conditioning at the rooms, it can get quite hot inside the rooms. Not so helpful, several dichroic lamps help to get the room even warmer. If you open the windows, some bugs can enter and disturb you.There's no fridge at the room, neither a safe, which it would be standard for this price category.Wi-Fi internet is free, however, it has very limited speed up to 256kbps. If you want more, you should pay £4 per hour or £9 per day, which gives you also access to premium movies (quite expensive, I've thought).Breakfast and Dining at the hotel is very pleasant, good food and nice service. If it's possible, get rates which include both, it's worth the money.View management response »

"Visit to Yorkshire Dales"

Staff were very pleasant but hotel is in need of upgrades, especially in the bedrooms. Excellent location for the Yorshire Dales but our beroom faced the main road and the traffic noise was high. No air conditioning and window opening was small and increased the road noise. Bar was ok but food was average. breakfast was excellent and service was great.View management response »

"Spacious leisure facilities, good breakfast but wedding disco meant no sleep"

We paid for superior room for the view of the garden and a few extras but room was situated in a courtyard and the hotel had 2 parties and a wedding that evening. Noise levels very loud and echoed around courtyard. We complained at midnight after which the levels varied but it was still as if we were in the disco itself. Music stopped at 1; revellers retired sometime after... Very tired and grumpy the next morning. Lovely pool and leisure staff. Room spacious and well equipped. Good breakfast choice offered till 12 and same for checkout times - both appreciated after being kept awake. Would be wary of staying at a weekend again.View management response »

As stated in our previous correspondence with you, I apologise once again for the effect of the disco which was due to a mix of doors being left open to the courtyard from the banqueting suite due to the heat last weekend and an over exuberant DJ with music volumes. Pleasant enough but slightly tired hotel on Leeds outskirts. Stayed for a Uni reunion dinner. Had a 'Studio' room up 1 flight of stairs (no lift). Large room but staid and outdated decor with poor lighting. Coffee / tea maker and iron but no minibar in room. TV ok, radiator worked ok. No net curtains, no aircon, no bath, shower was quite weak. Wifi in lobby free but slow and extra to pay if used in rooms.Staff helpful and attentive. Must particularly mention breakfast - we were greeted very enthusiastically by wonderful smiling friendly older gent - terrific!. Also very good variety of food and excellent service!Might stay there again if we were in the area as q good value for the money.View management response »

"a few hitches, but all sorted satisfactorily"

This was my second stay at the Mercure. The first stay - a few weeks ago - had been excellent and I couldn't fault it. This time I wasn't so lucky; a series of irritants marred my stay and by the time the fourth or fifth one occurred I decided to complain to the duty manager. She did not manifest the manner or the degree of empathy that I would've expected, and though she dealt with the issues, she neglected to apologise. However, she must have passed on my complaint to the general manager, Stewart Woodeson, the next morning because he rang me to apologise profusely and to refund the cost of my stay - and added that if I was returning I should contact him and he'd try to arrange an upgrade. I consider this excellent customer service, and given that none of the sequence of hitches I'd encountered was, of itself, particularly serious - it was just the combination of them all that had irritiated me - I shall certainly give it another chance. The general manager's attitude on this occasion has meant that this hotel hasn't lost a customer. I should also add that Jay Davenport on reception has, on both my stays, been most helpful and pleasant.View management response »

"Good value, for room price"

... but bar prices were very high, choice very limited and seating not suitable for using free wifi. Internet in rooms was extortionately priced. Breakfast at £13.95 with no option of continental except in room (but £10.00 if paid in advance), dining room(s) fully booked from 6:30 to 8:30.Bathroom was not ideal - touilet roll holder where one puts ones left knee, shower head fixed to end wall of bath and not adjustable, one light in bathroom not working. Mattresses were very saggy. This was room 326, and I assume that it has not yet been refurbished.I would use this hotel again, for the room price, but not use any other services.View management response »

We were warmly greeted by the receptionist who gave us a very nice room with a balcony. The room was kept spotless with clean sheets and towels throughout. Service at the bar was A1. We were greeted at breakfast by attentive waiters and the food was well prepared, hot and tasty with a good selection. From the Manager and all that was mentioned to the staff at the spa and pool were a credit to the company. Add to that, lovely weather and good visits to what Leeds has to offer then we would recommend this hotel.View management response »
