« Appalling »

The whole place is dated! Our room was terrible..... cracked mirror in bathroom, mould behind bathroom door, mould in the grout, dirty shower head. Pools of water in both windows when we woke..... then realised it had dropped into out luggage and we still had to go to another location and away for a further 4 days! Breakfast options were poor and quality was terrible but most off putting was the insect traps in the restaurant for everyone to see. Only positives were the leisure facilities pool, gym, suana jacuzzi but wasn't worth the money.

« Tired hotel with CBA front of house staff »

From the moment we walked in the door we were waiting.. there was a serious shortage of staff (helpful or otherwise) and the receptionist wasn't overly welcoming. Room was clean enough and the bed very comfy but the bathroom, as with most of the Mercure hotel groups chain, was tired and in need of a refit. The bath panel was a piece of plywood and the seal around the bath looked like it had been done by a monkey. I waited to get home to shower. Ordered room service and was told I had to pay cash when it arrived...luckily I had some!! £21 for a couple of sandwiches seemed a bit excessive but what are you going to do...there was no Piccalilli on the "Ham and Piccalilli" sandwich though!!!! Problems with the computers meant we had to pay for drinks at the bar rather than on our room tab as well...most unusual..The evening dinner was pretty unspectacular. It was a presentation dinner so very much "conference food"...I couldn't eat my main course as it was a bit too bland. The bar staff were a mix of "out of their depth and overworked" but one lad was very helpful over a mix up with one of my guests dinners...he disappeared to the kitchen and the meal duly arrived...top marks to him. The receptionist couldn't even be bothered to wish us farewell when we said goodbye, she'd obviously had a long night.

« Very Poor Service »

I stayed for one night as part of a business trip to the area. Although the room was OK, there was a lot of black mould on the shower tiles grouting, and the room fixtures & fittings really need updating. The worst part of my visit was the service at dinner, which was was very poor, with mistakes being made with both my food and drinks orders. The service was also very slow; I waited over 45 minutes from ordering before my first course arrived. My impression was that all of the staff were preoccupied with a large coach tour also staying there. Breakfast the following morning was no better, as I needed an early 7am start, and the self-service cooked breakfast servery was almost empty, with staff not keeping up with demand. No-one asked if I wanted tea or coffee, again all the staff attention appeared to be directed at the coach tour. I will not be staying here again.

« If only it had been standard bog................... »

Would've been 4-star had it not been for the saga of the toilet (room 895); in a 4-night stay, I had to raise the problem 3 times and when, eventually, something was done, it led to a different fault!! The communication between the hotel and us as customers left a lot to be desired. On the plus side, room and hotel very clean, friendly staff. A special mention for the kitchen and wait-staff; very good indeed. Breakfasts and evening meals were hot, tasty and substantial. Other minor gripes, but, overall, enjoyable. We would return if in the area.......................but I'd want to check the toilet if offered 895!

« Bit tired looking. »

Was OK but for the money it looked a bit tired. Grand name at travel lodge quality. Staff were very polite and helpful, the location was very handy for where we needed to be. Bed was very comfy but we were next to the lift which was a bit noisy.

No trouble in booking into the hotel, when inspected the room we were given was not the room we had paid for or requested, went back to the reception to ask for another room and was told they classed the room as a suite there was no extra sitting area in the room. went back upstairs and informed my wife, not happy about this went back to the reception and asked for the manager, explained to the manager and she was very helpful. Had a look at the suites which were available and selected a room. later we went down to the bar, ordered two drinks one a pint of bodintons which ended up being the last one as the keg finished and was not quite a full pint and tasted like it was the last one in the pipes also the diet coke from the soda stream was also flat, rest of the evening we ended drinking lager and bottled pepsi, we ordered a couple of bar meals l had the two lamb, the hot pot was hot but the slices of lamb part of the dish was cold. in the morning when having a cup of coffee/tea there is nowhere to put your cups down if sitting in the sitting area other then on the arms of the chairs. the shower had very low pressure and ran hot and cold while having a shower. having stayed a few times at this hotel before it was very disappointing this time.

« Unexpected surprise »

Bleak mid Jan you expect hotels to be quiet and at times understaffed. The Mercure Georgian in Bolton exceeded my expectations in all areas. Good atmosphere and excellent knowledgeable friendly staff in all areas of the hotel from the front desk through to the bar restaurant and all their leisure and beauty facilities.

« Good staff, Good food, AWFUL rooms »

Plastic towel rails, 15" TVs, 80's bathroom fittings, lino, tired furniture.... I could go on. The hotel is in a lovely location for Westhoughton/Bolton and the old building is fabulous but the ~£80 rooms are SO tired they are barely Travel Lodge/Premier Inn standard. The breakfast is good as are all the staff, which almost makes up for it. At this price in this part of the world AND with this brand I expect better.
