The 4-star Mercure George Washington Hotel Golf and Spa is ideally located just 15 minutes from Newcastle Upon Tyne, Sunderland and Durham, 10 minutes from the Metro Centre and 15 miles from Newcastle Airport. Situated in close proximity to major road networks, the hotel boasts an 18 hole championship golf course and a state of the art gym, spa and beauty treatment centre, which has been recently refurbished.
The hotel has a restaurant which serves lunch and dinner as well as a bar in which to relax in the evenings. There is an indoor swimming pool with a fitness gym for guests to use to their content as well as a golf putting green.

Reception staff are confused about the Accor Hospitality programme for Gold status members. We were not offered a welcome drink when we stayed there in August (6guests) three rooms. Neither was our membership card awarded the points that we were entitled to. Had to fight tooth and nail with Accor customer services to have the points restored. The same exercise was repeated by the hotel on the 28th October 2016. No welcome drink staff confused about the Accor hospitality programme for Gold status members. Situation slightly better when we stayed there on the 4th November 2016 and after intervention by Mr Martin Hall General Manager. Staff were a lot more attentive for our last stay on the 18th November 2016. Still waiting to have the points credited for our stay from the 4th November to 6th November 2 016!! There was general lack of soundproofing for the rooms especially on first floor. At night we got woken up by noises resembling like a herd of animals in a stampede in the corridors many times over the course of our 4 stays. One night we were woken up 3.30 in the morning by the fire alarm. Our 2 year old grand daughter never went back to sleep again. When we questioned the reception staff all they said was a guest had switched the fire alarm on!! No apology or compensation of any sort.

I stay in this hotel on a regular basis and it is always generally good but it seems that every time there are one or two tiny irritations that would prevent a higher rating. On this occasion, a pre-booked alarm call and an ordered newspaper failed to materialise. As I say, small things that could and should be improved, which would gain a higher rating.

Unfortunately we had a bit of a mixed experience with this hotel at the weekend. We booked two ones one for myself and husband and the other a family room for my daughter and her two children. I would advise anyone staying at the hotel who is an allergy suffer to be well prepared. My grandson has a sever nut allergy, so at breakfast we asked the usual questions about the bread and if it had any nut content in the sliced bread and were given a funny look and told it was ok. However on pressing the waitress she went to ask the kitchen and came running back saying that the brown bread was not safe for allergy suffers. The cold tap for the bath did not work and was broken so we couldn't put the children in the bath on the first night. They did mend it promptly the next day though. Part of the reason for staying at this hotel was the pool. However that was being repaired at the weekend, so that could not be used. The staff however did point us in the direction of another hotel in the chain where we could use the pool free of charge. The reality however was that if we wanted to travel to a pool we may have stayed in another hotel or that hotel. On the positive side the staff were very friendly and welcoming, the hotel was clean and the new restaurant has very nice with good quality food. The staff were very good in the restaurant with the children but the issue with allergies left us on edge a bit even to the extent that we went and brought a loaf of bread so we knew my grandson could eat something safely.

Standard of accommodation was very good; Breakfast was substantial and they had no problem catering for food allergies. Didn't dine in the new Pizzeria restaurant on this trip which was new from my last visit

We stayed for the first time for 6 nights. It was great to be able to play a game of golf or use the driving range in between visiting family. The room was very comfortable and clean. The staff were really lovely, we didn't book for breakfast but the meals in the evening were good too. We hope to return!

We had almost 2 weeks at this hotel. We needed to stay in this area for family reasons as we were over from Australia visiting our 92 year old mother. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful - especially Gemma in the restaurant. The rooms were fine - clean and comfortable. The access was a challenge with so many passages and steps which would be a challenge for some. The restaurant was reasonably expensive for this type of hotel. We enjoyed some really good meals and some of more average quality (this goes for breakfast and dinner). I think it must depend on which chef is working. All in all a pleasant though not memorable stay

This hotel has improved steadily over the past couple fo years since I have been staying there. Rooms are clean and well equipped. Restaurant quality is good and the staff are attentive. Service overall is friendly and staff are willing to be of assistance.

Once again the facilities and service was first rate, with the receptionist Jade being particularly helpful, we would always stay there when we are in that area in future, in fact we are considering stopping for longer next time

This is not the first time we have stopped at the George Washington, and it wont be the last. apart from the facilities which are all first class, the staff are exceptional, they ALL treat the guests with the upmost respect, and they are always very helpful and friendly, we always look forward to our stay there.

We had the George Washington Hotel suggested to us by family and it lived up to its billing. We found the hotel to have execillent rooms with good facilities very comfy beds . The hotel staff were very friendly and efficient and the hotel is in a good location for a visit to Newcastle
