The George Hotel is believed to be the oldest existing building in Reading, dating back to at least as far as 1423. It was one of the major coaching inns between London and the West Country in the 18th century, and it still retains many of its wonderful:original Coaching Inn features, including Tudor Archways and a very attractive Cobbled stone courtyard. The main entrance from King Street still contains some of the original timbers, and 18th and 19th century facades overlook the courtyard.

Well placed in the city center - lovely friendly staff who were very helpful. Rooms were hot during the night but we were given a fan which helped. Hairdryer, iron and fridge in rooms. No onsite carpark but you can unload just outside and a car park is a few minutes away.

Good average hotel centrally but after having the mornings woken up by fire alarm we complaint at the check-out. No understanding was shown what so ever neither was compensation offered. On the contrary. When promised "the manager" would be in contact with us immediately nothing happened. Despite they have both telephone number and email. No respect.
Excellent location, right in the centre of Reading Close to the station, restaurants, bars and clubs. This was my second stay here as my daughter is at University and its a great stop over point to meet up.
Thank you very much for your review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your visit to The Mercure George Reading and look forward to welcoming you back when you next come to visit your daughter. Kind Regards Stuart Hall General Manager
The hotel building is one of the oldest buildings in Reading. There was a refurbishment process going on while I stayed at the hotel, but I didn't here any noise of the work. My room was at the already refurbished side of the hotel and the room was really nice and modern. Only complaint I have is that the bed was way too soft. If my wife would have been with me she probably couldn't have slept in that bed at all.
Thank you very much for your review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your visit to The Mercure George Hotel in Reading. I will look into you comment regarding the bed. Hope to see you again in the future. Kind Regards Stuart Hall General Manager
The beds are very comfortable which was well received after a long trip. Good breakfast and helpful and friendly staff. Do not worry about your bags as the kind staff will take them to your room for you.
The George is a lovely yet quirky hotel, with rooms haphazardly spread around the place. Some of the rooms are dated, yet it's good value for money and central, so a great place to stay and I stay there once a week on average.
I've stayed at a number of Mercure hotels and have to say that standards do seem to vary quite a lot. This is not one of their best. Granted part of it is an old building so creaking floorboards are only to be expected, with what seems like a maze of passageways, but the rooms are looking a bit tired; I booked two rooms and in one the bathroom door handle was falling off. It was New Year's Eve - but the hotel was not celebrating - no food after 8 p.m. and the bar closed at 11. Even at Accor's budget brand Ibis I would have expected the bar to be open at midnight on New Year's Eve! Breakfast was an OK buffet but not very imaginative, although you can order fried or poached eggs. I came away thinking I should have booked at Ibis or Novotel because 'quaintness' seems to be an excuse for unenthusiastic service. It made me wonder if the hotel is going to close down soon.
I am sorry that on this occasion you were disappointed with your stay at The Mercure George in Reading. I will personally look into the commets you have made. Please send me your e-mail address so i can come back to you. Kind Regards Stuart Hall General Manager
Great hotel with cool old character. Great location, 5mins from local transport and 1 minute from town. Surrounded by coffee shop and bar. Staff are always friendly and rooms are warm. Weekend rates are very reasonable.
The George is a quirky, fun and reasonably priced hotel in central Reading. The location couldn't be better, and if you manage to get a room upgrade (as I did last weekend), you will fall in love with your room. The rooms are cheaper on a weekend, which makes the value for money seriously stand out.
The George Hotel Reading is an excellent hotel with lots of character. Its location is fantastic, in the heart of Reading and minutes away from the railway station where the trains run every 15 mins into London Paddington. The staff are very attentive and professional. The hotel has a an arrangement with a nearby car park, £6.50 for 24 hour parking. Our suite 'Great Expectation' was extremely spacious and comfortable. We will be returning in December!!!
Pathetic place with dust and unclean rooms.. Never consider unless you get it below $1 a night..Rooms are not accessible with luggage and bathrooms are in bad shape.. bed nakeks noise more than a bus..
I am really sorry to hear that your stay at Mercure George Reading was not up to your expectations and would like to discuss the issues mentioned in person. Please could you contact me on email@example.com. Kind Regards Stuart Hall General Manager
The hotel is in need of a refurb, reception area is small and un-impressive. The rooms are ok and bed comfy but walls are thin so disturbance from other rooms and guests in the corridor can be expected. We wanted a drink at 11:20 pm on a Saturday night but bar was shut and night porter has only wine and bottled beer which we thought rubbish. The breakfast room is shabby as was the breakfast - we would not stay again while the hotel is as it is.

Stayed here for three nights last week. The hotel looks lovely from the outside, made two seperate booking, the first for 1 night then one for two nights, unfortunately the hotel didnt realise this and instead of putting us in one room they had us changing rooms after the first night. Sandra on reception sorted this out when I told her. The breakfast was good, plenty to eat. We had a room at the back of the hotel, the room was a bit on the small size, it was warm but it was quiet enough to open the window.
