"Worst hotel ever"
22nd May 2012, lovejoy23, Swindon, United Kingdom
First of all, if you've arrived in Cardiff without your own means of transport, forget it. This place is about 20 minutes walk from the train station and you have to cross some pretty nasty roads and dual carriageways to get there, plus the fact that it's in one of the less salubrious areas of Cardiff. The rooms are very basic. There are tea and coffee making facilities although you only get one cup of each (someone mentioned that reception would be happy to supply more but that involves a trip to reception, why not just supply more?).The beds are utterly uncomfortable, very thin mattresses and pillows and in a stroke of genius, only one spare pillow in the wardrobe (in a double room). So a night of sleepless tossing and turning and every time you moved, the bed creaked badly. I spent the week before this camping and my camp-bed was more comfortable than this. The room was stuffy and badly air conditioned and considering there are no openable windows made for an even more uncomfortable night. The one positive point I will mention was the bathroom which was nicely laid out, the shower was good and powerful and large. Just one plastic glass in the bathroom though , which in a double room just seems like taking penny pinching that bit too far and on arrival at the hotel it seemed that someone had left us a present in the toilet. Thanks very much to whoever made that donation.I wouldn't recommend this place and certainly wouldn't return here. Certainly when there is an Etap hotel about 1/4 mile closer to town where you don't have to traverse the dual carriageway if you're on foot.

"not too bad?"
30th April 2012, Stourport on Severn, United Kingdom
good room, large shower cubicle, comfy bed, ok breakfast, down sides, no wifi in rooms, poor tv channel choice, pay parking
"advertised as 4*?"
30th April 2012, youldy, Birmingham, United Kingdom
Very disappointed with the overall look of the the interior, was expecting it to work out to be a bargain, 4* hotel for less than £60, Reception/Bar area was about as plush as some youth hostels I've stayed in in Holland for £10 a night. The long dull corridors left alot to be desired and although the furnishings in the room seemed of a decent standard, the apperance prior to getting into your room was no better than an average IBIS. TBH the IBIS in Birmingham City Centre leaves this place for dead. When talking to the night manager, he confirmed that that hotel was used as an overspill for the much nicer Holland House Hotel in the City where I have previously stayed and was impressed with. In my opinion they should change the signage to that of an IBIS to lower expectations and it would then be well placed.

"Comfortable and good value, but a bit far from the centre"
7th March 2012, drdjf48, Basingstoke
Very comfortable and good value hotel. Rooms at the back overlook a railway shunting yard, and there can be noise at night.Free parking for residents. A 15 minute walk to the city centre, across a busy road junction but worth the walk.Cooked breakfast was good, but less choice than some others. Friendly staff and easy check-in/out.

"Disappointed"
6th March 2012, Calne, United Kingdom
THis hotel is conveniently located if driving to the Millennium Centre but parking costs £3 per day. The ground floor room had no net curtains so there was no day-time privacy from the car park with cars parked right outside the window. There was no remote for the TV but this was remedied. The shower tray has mould under the door. The heating.air conditioning was too noisy to permit sleep so had to be turned off leaving the room cold. Fortunately there was a another duvet on the second bed.

"Shabby 4 star"
26th February 2012, Truro, United Kingdom
Not up to our expectations! Though we had found a good deal last minute, I did not expect to find the towels thin and old, toiletries enough for one only and a very shabby cafe style breakfast experience in an open area with a loud television. The bench seating had seen better days. When I asked for orange juice at breakfast, the staff member found that to be a bit of a chore because he had to load a box into the dispenser. The reception staff were however very helpful and professional.

clean and tidy with helpful friendly staff. large room - no bath but huge double walk in shower! good breakfast selection in morning-fairly expensive would suggest you try and get a package stay here including breakfast..long walk from town centre however £5 to £8 in taxi depending on time of day from/to city centre and reception will book hotel for you.

"A hidden gem"
7th February 2012, Carmarthen, United Kingdom
Had a good nights rest here , booked a disabled room and got 2 double beds in the room , room was very spacious and the bathroom nice and big too, just wish the bathroom had a walk in shower , the bath was low but for a wheelchair user this would be a no no. A 10 min walk from the centre of Cardiff or a short can ride ( about a £5) so great for a night in town as what's a £5 these days ?? Recommended , will stay there again in the future

"Very good value hotel"
25th January 2012, chrissyboy21
The hotel is quite close to the centre but not a very pleasant walk to it. A car is essential as the hotel is surrounded in dual carriageways making it difficult to walk around unless you don't mind climbing crash barriers. However, the hotel itself is modern, clean and roomy with friendly, helpful staff,. Buffet breakfast was perfectly adequate and the rooms were clean. The bed was particularly uncomfortable but other members of the party found them ok. Bathroom was good and shower worked well but there was no heating in the bathroom and the extraction did not work. Taking all this into consideration our stay was very good value at £58 for three in a family room with breakfast included. It is therefore recommended.

"Great"
8th September 2011, Birmingham, United Kingdom
A decent hotel, had a decent room ,but no loo seat lid and a very noisy firm matteress. The hotel staff are always polite and happy to help.the maids do a fab mini clean if you stop more then one night-.The location is a bit strange-but we have stayed before ,it's a bit of a treck across a busy duel carrageway and under the underpass to get to the city centre but only a 10 minutes walk .We would stop again.
"Another Great stay"
8th September 2011, Welsh-Jane, Swansea, Wales, UK
I have used this hotel several times over the past couple of years and always found the service to be very good. The rooms are adequate although this time I did find the bed rather uncomfortable and squeaky! I didn't realise the pillows were feather until very late but the barman was extremely helpful and got them changed straight away. The hotel is within walking distance of the city centre and its very quick on foot if you cross over the railway footbridge to get to the Motorpoint Arena formerly the Cardiff International Arena. Crossing the two dual carriageways and the large roundabout on foot by the hotel can be a bit challenging though.
"My 3 days stay at the mercure Cardiff"
8th September 2011, Telford, United Kingdom
I found the room good value however the breakfast I felt was poor value and on Friday morning the hotel had no bacon and was awaiting a delivery, so the choice was scambled egg and beans. Also they do not offer a cooked breakfast at weekends which if I had known this I would not have pre booked breakfast, overall I found the breakfast choice poor. The location was a problem for my elderly parents .
"Long Weekend"
5th September 2011, Derby, United Kingdom
We stayed for 4 nights on an extended weekend break. Mostly OK but there was no remote control for the TV and when I asked at reception they said they were on order! Don't they come with theTV? Another issue was that we had to wait until nearly 5-00 on the Sunday to get our room serviced. Having spent a tiring day we were wanting to relax & unwind late afternoon but couldn't as we were expecting a knock at the door at any second to clean the room. When they did arrive we had to go down to the reception to wait for them to finish
"Another disappointing Mercure experience"
5th September 2011, PommieB, Sydney
The area in which the hotel is located was strewn with litter of long standing. The City Centre was a fair walk from the hotel along a pedestrian unfriendly route. The hotel carpeting within the room and the corridors was badly stained and the paintwork was marked. Breakfast was poor in selection of items and quality. All in all a depressing overnight experience.
"very good stay"
5th August 2011, Aberystwyth
the location is just what I needed, close to the centre of Cardiff, but in a quiet location, I was impressed with the room, the bead was very comfy, facilities ok and shower room large and clean (could do with a little extra touches 'in the corners' but it may be me being fussy) the bar was a bit of a dissapointment as there was only guiness wine or spirits and neither me or my bf are fan of those. Breakfast ok but nothing to go crazy about. Nevertheles it was a good value for money and I would stay again
"Cardiff two night stay."
31st July 2011, Ashford Kent
Enjoyable stay clean good quality rooms. Only used hotel to sleep. Beds were a little uncomfortable. Location a little out of the way but only 15-20 minute walk from main city centre.Price was very reasonable. A very good budget hotel.
"Recent stay"
24th July 2011, Andy88888
Can't really fault my recent stay although you may want to request a room not on the railway side of the hotel. I'd also say that the beds are quite soft and the hotel should consider a replacement program. Pillows have also seen better days. On the plus side great power shower with plenty of room and good air conditioning and plenty of parking but website should really mention this is chargable at time of booking.
