The room we were given for the first night was really nice and as advertised. The second room on second night was the exact opposite, based on the 3rd floor, no air conditioning and it was about 30 degrees. Offered a fan to compensate which would not have done the job. Ended up having to change rooms but this took over half an hour to arrange and in turn made us late for the event that we had come for.

Nothing much more to add, it was awful. It was only when we investigated that we worked out what the problem was, the mattress was upside down. We'd already moved rooms once as the first was dark an dingy. The one upside was that we got home earlier than planned because the bed was so bad!

The first room you stayed in is one of our most popular rooms due its character and the size of the room, as well as the furniture, but on a cloudy day, the room can indeed look somewhat darker, and we were of course perfectly happy to offer you a brighter room. I investigated the mattresses in the new room in question. These mattresses had been newly purchased half a year ago and are generally really nice and comfortable, but I indeed found one of them to be upside down. The top side is really nice and soft, but unfortunately wasn't on top. I was surprised that nobody mentioned it before, nor that my housekeeping team hadn't noticed it. I sincerely apologize for this unnecessary mistake. I trust that you meanwhile received my e-mail and look forward to hearing back from you. I found the staff really friendly and helpfull from the moment I arrived. Room was perfect for my needs and great value. Bar stayed open till 2am to serve us a few more drinks when we got back from the Wedding. Great Form! If I am in the area again I would definitely stay here again.

We reserved two twin rooms with breakfast included, and we were put into two damaged rooms. And although we had a written confirmation that breakfast was included they wanted to charged us extra for the breakfast until the last day of our stay. It was a bit awkward and not too pleasant for one of the staff insisted on it and even put a call for us to be denied of the breakfast the next morning (in front of other guess). Really downgrading that once nice and cozy hotel, for it is not what it once was. Both rooms had the door stop broken and every time the door closed it made a big bang unpleasant noise. One of the rooms was damaged with a leaking air conditioner, the carpet all dirty and looking really terrible! The a/c made a terrible noise every time we turned on, and the last day of our stay started leaking heavily, wetting some of our clothes and suitcases. We told them about all of this the first morning, and they agreed to fix those problems, but nothing was fixed, nobody did anything. Maintenance wise it is a terrible bad maintained hotel. We also had to ask for extra moisturizer, soap… etc for they did not put at all any toiletries or they put little knowing that we were 2 persons in each room. Like I said, a pity, for it was once a nice and cozy hotel. And although the manager had the courtesy of leaving us for a late checkout without any extra charge in the “broken A/C” room until 4pm, and one free breakfast for one of our sons, we feel that something else was needed. For some of the staff really treated us badly and without any consideration, lying to us most of the time and being unpleasant.

When one arrives after enduring the M25 and the M3 the car parking arrangements were not immediately obvious however our bags were taken to our room (no lift). Removed the nuisance decorations from the bed. No stand for our suitcase! Room (307) was drab. Miserable paintings on the walls. bathroom very small. Sitting on loo and wash basin digs into your back and knee hits the towel rail. What defined a 'classic' room? All senior management and hotel room designers should spend 2 or 3 nights in their rooms. Hand rail on staircase too wide to grip! The only reason that we give a generous three stars and not two is for a reasonable breakfast and pleasant staff although I was not told that a code was needed to leave the car park. Annoying on a very wet morning!

Primarily to celebrate my birthday, but coupled with a meeting the following day at the Castle with our wedding planner and photographer, we thought this an excellent opportunity to 'bench-test' the hotel many of our guests would be utilising for our June wedding - including myself as the groom the night before (N2S: next time checkout nearby availability of lamp posts and clingfilm suppliers). The Hotel itself was easy to find, not least because it is delightfully situated right in the centre of this beautiful and historic town. With parking at a premium it was refreshing to find adequate space in a secure area to the rear of the hotel - don't be initially disheartened as I was when you see the smaller parking area at the front fully occupied. We arrived well ahead of the 2pm check-in time, but for the extremely charming, helpful, and heavily French-accented receptionist, this was far from unsurmountable. Asking us to take a seat and offering tea and coffee, she said she would see what she could do. Clearly busy, but multi-tasking like a professional 1-armed paper hanger, she promptly returned to us with issued keys. In fact the multiitude of staff we came across during the period of stay reflected equally this level of politemess, positivity, and 'can-do' attitude, whether it be the various maintenance technicians, the chamber maid, right up to Maitre D in the restuarant, nothing was too much trouble. We were in the standard rooms (it might be my birthday, but we have a wedding to pay for), which was situated on the ground floor of 'new' wing - not new, probably quite old in fact, but decidely newer than the main buiding. These rooms are a little pokey, but fit for purpose and at least on the ground floor have floor to ceiling windows together with a door onto the lush green lawn. The bed iteself and furniture are to a comfortable standard and the Mrs-desig thought the pillows were to die for (no, we didn't steal any, we're coming back remember). The bathroom is equally as confined, but what I believe from a refurbishment, the bath has been replaced with a shower cubicle thus optimising what legacy space there is. My only criticism at this point was a nearby fire door in the adjacent passage. When we arrived and said offending door slammed behind me, I should have guessed its' faulty pneumatic hinge would haunt me later that night. Luckily the outstandingly awesome breakfast more than made up for it.

This was our 5th stay in a Mercure Hotel but probably the least satisfactory. The staff were friendly, helpful and accomodating. The room was supposed to be an upgraded "Privilage" room but there were some issues that I would not have expected in this day and age: The pillows provided were of a feather content to which I am very allergic bringing on swollen eyes, runny nose and asthma - common enough these days (and potentially dangerous with asthmatics) for them not to be used. When we asked for them to be changed this was done promptly but by this time it was too late and the after effects lasted well into the following morning despite taking anti-allergy tablets. Ther was a large, unpleasant stain in the middle of the carpet. (room 113) and two broken winoow handles. Hotel staff cannot have failed to notice these yet we were allocated this room when others were evidently free, perhaps they were worse?
