"Don't stay here!"

We regretted choosing this hotel based on our familiarity with Mercure . On the positive side, the location is perfect and the amenities would be more than adequate, but the management of this establishment and the attitude of many of the staff is simply shocking: we couldn't believe Accor is letting this happen, as even as very loyal customers, we are now all questioning the reliability of their brands and whether we will ever stay at one of theirhotel again! The food is simply awful; reception is most unhelpful and keeps you waiting for hours, even well beyond the stated check-in times, although it should be rather simple to get rooms ready with most people checking out early in the morning to make their flights; maintenance is really poor (ok, it'sCuba after all) with air-con vents not just leaking but cascading onto the corridors, sockets not working and exposing naked wires; poorly maintained bathrooms, not to mention the smell coming from the kitchen... Honestly, sewage is probably less unpleasant... Never again!

As usual in Cuba, before arrival there was some emailing back and forth between the hotel reservation and me regarding payment with credit card, mine wasn't accepted by the bank because it seemed to be backed by USA banking. That was the only thing the hotel seemed to be interested in because in regard to my other questions I never received an answer from them.I booked a 6 days stay for 47 euros a day breakfast only (Since we don't like the All Inclusive concept). At check in I was asked to pay a mandatory All Inclusive 20 Euros per day per person a total of 240 Euros. Which naturally, I refused to pay (after talking to the hotel manager). Why? This stuff should show up when I before I confirm my booking, not afterward so I can select another hotel.Entering the first room we got, hmm, not the bed I booked, bed cover with stains, few broken things, old furniture, blond hairball in the shower gutter, to noisy to sleep because of traffic and bar activity on the other side of the street.I asked for another room away from the noise which they gave me 2 days later, and to apologize for the trouble they gave me a room with sea view.Breakfast in the restaurant, plenty of tasty things to eat, a cook making your eggs for you the way you like them even though some were not to happy if you come with a simple special request like in our case of preparing the eggs in a separate pan due to allergy issues. Some were not to happy about that. Cleanliness could be better, lipstick on glasses and they don't change the table cloth before the next person sits down for breakfast. Sorry but I don't need to see what the previous person had to eat.Personal I got along with (most of them), probably because I speak the language and leaving the room maids a little something once in a while.The location of the hotel is good, right in the middle of Varadero and easy to go everywhere from there.Plenty of desks where u can find information about day trips or other things to do there.
