Mercure Johannesburg Midrand Hotel: 5.0 out of 5 stars "Home away from home"

6th April 2012, Ketilito, Heggedal, Norway

I have stayed a total of 5 nights recently in this hotel, in three different stays (2+1+2) in three different rooms, and I have really felt at home here. The staff is just GREAT, the hotel is stylishly appointed and well-kept, and the rooms had everything I needed. In a country where you don't go for evening walks, having a good television with a good selection of channels is quite important, and here the rooms have 32 inch flat screens with BBC news, a couple of sports channels and some entertainment channels. The breakfast is very good, but 120 ZAR (about 12 EUR) is perhaps a bit too expensive. No other meals, but the Value Faire, a small mall next-door, has Indian and Chinese restaurants, an Irish pub and a Steers outlet. Steers is the South African alternative to McDonalds, which they will probably beat 999 to 1 in a blind test. A fairly large shopping mall - Borders - is a 10 minute walk away, with a Shoprite supermarket a bit nearer than that. The rooms have fridges and coffee makers. Their WiFi is good, but unfortunately not free. The cheapest option is 30 min for 40 ZAR, enough if you are just checking your e-mail and updating your Facebook status. If you are taking the Gautrain from the airport on arrival without too much luggage you can walk to the hotel in 15-20 min. Walk along the road under the Gautrain tracks until you have a McDonalds on your right. Turn right there and go one block down, and turn left. You are then on Old Pretoria Main Road, and after 3 traffic lights (called robots in SA) you will see the purple/pink Mercure sign on the left side of the road. The map on their internet site is useless, and the one they send you if you e-mail them, is only helpful for people arriving by car. An alternative is taking a Gautrain feeder bus to the stop called Gallagher Estate (a large conference center) and walk through the center and then through the Value Faire. Then the walk is about 10 minutes and probably a bit safer. If that also sounds too complicated, they will apparently send a car to pick you up for 80 ZAR.

Mercure Johannesburg Midrand Hotel: 2.0 out of 5 stars "False/Unethical Reward Scheme"

7th February 2012, Johannesburg, South Africa

I am Accor frenquent guest member. I issued myself a voucher via your website in order to use as payment and as a result did not reserve the booking via my credit card.My secretary therefore booked 2 nites - one with the hotel directly (without reserving with my credit card) while the other I paid with my credit card on the website. The hotel refused to honour my frequent guest rate of R575 for the unpaid nite (and further converted $60 voucher at a rate of 7.02 although the current rate for the day of 7.93, which is daylight robbery ) and instead charged me R790 for the unpaid night. Further, when I got to my hotel room in the evening of the 2nd night, all my belonngings had been removed - clothes and meals left in the fridge (they erreaneously for got that i was booked for 2 nights). Therefore accor seems to run an unethical frequent rewards scheme - were their frequent guest get charged the non-frequent guest rate (which is further aggravated by a poor currency conversion rate) - to negate any frequenst guest monetary reward that the membership promises. Un-believable and unethical customer service!!!!
