We paid $250/night in the off-season for a great view and not much else. The hotel is located far from town and costs 10€ by taxi to get to town or you can catch a cable car for 3.60€ per person to get a quarter of the way and look for a bus that we were advised came directly at the base of the hill. The room service is not good and the water bottles in the mini-bar had broken seals. We were expecting a great hotel considering the price and we were thoroughly disappointed. Best to get a hotel in the centre and pay the 5€ to come up for the view...
Stayed here fore two nights on the way from the UK to Portugal. Chose the hotel because of the stunning views and because I have always used Accor Group hotels, and have been generally happy. Hotel is in a great location (amazing views of the bay), in generally good condition and the room was very nice with a fantastic view of the bay. Before I give the negative, I have to say the reception staff were excellent, really helpful - the guy who checked us in spent some time drawing on a map and telling us where we might like to visit, and how to get there. Top marks for that. The lady in charge of the bar was pretty good too. Where it went wrong was the restaurant. The food, in my view, was average at very best, but the service was the rudest I have EVER known. It wasn't just my view - we saw several people complain at the fact their well done steaks were still bleeding profusely, and in each case were treated (in my opinion) pretty rudely. The first night was just about bearable, but we felt that the Head Waiter was rude and blunt, and it took an age for us to get served, and there was no follow-up - we had to walk up to a member of serving staff to ask for the bill! The second night, we didn't want to eat there, but the logistics meant we decided to give it a second chance. The rudeness hit new heights. Blunt and discourteous were the key words. Totally ignored once we finished eating, waited ages with no-on attending to us, and couldn't catch anyone's eyes, so we went up and asked if we could have the bill and sign it. There was another couple there who had felt the need to do the same, and they also said they felt they were treated with utter rudeness, and that they had seen others treated the same. The final insult was when the Head Waiter bought me the bill and a pen. I signed it and went to hand it back to him, and before I could do so, he looked away and started talking to a member of staff, and took the bill from me without looking at me or acknowledging me in any way, then just walked away. I felt embarrassed and humiliated to be treated that way in front of guests and staff. Despite my dissatisfaction, both my wife and I were perfectly polite and courteous, so such behavior was unjustified. I cannot believe they have not had many other complains about the restaurant. We certainly won't be returning there, and I am struggling to justify using any other group hotels again. Considering the price paid, utterly unacceptable.
What's with the staff? We were greeted by the most miserable receptionist I have ever met so went to bar to cheer ourselves up and the barman was even worse. Only saving grace was the view. Bleak barman doubled up waiting tables in the restaurant with a together with a funereal Lurch, we couldn't wait to get out of there. Dinner was just as dismal.
the location couldn't be any better but what you don't need (especially for a holiday stay) is receptionists who put a complaint call on speaker and laugh their socks off while you wait to be checked in, the hotel bar to be closed at least one hour before announced time (due to staff shortage), to stand in the hallway in front of your "privilege"room in order to get poor wifi reception, to wait 15 minutes to be seated for breakfast and receptionists who deny any responsibility because they just work at the reception. Obviously corporate stinginess....but the location is exceptional anyway.
This hotel has one of the most wonderful views and worth visiting for that alone. However the service leaves a lot to be desired, from the miserable reception onwards. The barman at the time we were there, decided it was more important to wash down the tables than serve us, he was the most unfriendly and unsmiling person, I have ever encountered in a hotel, if he does not like people whatever is he doing in a service industry? Unfortunately he surfaced again in the restaurant in the evening, thankfully the other restaurant staff were more friendly and helpful.
