GautamMajumdar Couples - TripAdvisor review

One of the things we wanted to do in Egypt, after seeing the pyramids, was to stay at the Old Cataract, probably the most famous hotel in the region. The hotel is absolutely lovely, with the most stunning views of a bend in the Nile. You could spend the whole day in the Terrace watching life in the river. The rooms are large and remind you of the great hotels of yesteryears, though everything is super plush. We also had dinner in the legendary 1902 restaurant which has superb cuisine. But our favourite was definitely the Terrace. A must stay on a visit to Egypt.

Very disappointed Service

The hotel itself is undoubtedly stunning and is beautifully kept . The best hotel bed I have ever slept in ….like sleeping on a cloud. We stayed for two nights in Catarat Suite with a Nile view as it was our birthdays. The terrace restaurant was very poor . The service was awful for a five star hotel . You expect to be shown to a table as soon as you walk in ,not have to wait until the waiter (who has seen you ) decides to come and speak !!!! The food was very bland and unappetising and I was very poorly on our first night . They need to upgrade their game …you can’t just rely on 1 or 2 nighters coming to see the place OR perhaps that’s what they want !!!!! Very disappointed ☹️

Following in Agatha Christie's footsteps...

Let's face it, we wanted to stay here because it's where Agatha Christie stayed and wrote Death on the Nile. There are many lovely period elements such as the terrace with ceiling fans and the old elevator and bar but the main restaurant is very dark and and has no ambience. It's a shame that breakfast can't be taken on the terrace overlooking the wonderful view. The food was disappointing and definitely not 5 star standard. The pool area was lovely and the service was good and of course the Nile as a back drop was magical. A good base from which to visit Abu Simbel before embarking on our cruise.
