Did not feel save after the fire alarm went off at midnight.

At around midnight on our 2 nd night stay at the hotel the fire alarm went off. We were on the 3rd floor (room 365 ) and proceeded to the exit stairwell. On the ground floor there were no exit signs, we found ourselves in the lobby of the and Ibis Hotel . We made our way back into the reception area of Hotel Mercury. The attendant at the desk did not reassure people but was quiet offhand saying there had been a false alarm. Everyone was confused. We went back to our room using the lifts which were still working and non of the fire doors had closed. We are both in our 80th year and didn’t feel safe. The following morning we asked to move to the ground floor which the receptionist kindly organised. We were both not impressed with the way that the fire alarm situation was handled. Had a false alarm happened in a UK hotel all the residents would be required to congregate in an outside designated area. A roll call would have been done to make sure that everyone had left their hotel rooms. Only the fire department can give the signal telling people it is safe to return into the building. We now feel very reluctant to book into The Mercury Hotel again. Sincerely. Mr and Mrs J Q Jacksom

Dear Mr and Mrs J Q J.. We thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We were just as concerned about the fire alarm as you were, obviously we would have wished it didn't happen for the comfort of our guests. We do assure you that this was a false alarm however and we didn't treat it as something more serious because it wasn't. A client smoke in their room even though it is written everywhere that it is forbidden and subject to being charged 200euros. The smoke unfortunately triggered the alarm but be sure that our receptionist personally went to verify that everything was OK. As such we weren't going to disturb our guests any further. Thank you for your understanding and sharing your experience. Although unfortunate, we do assure you that this was an exceptional event that was handled the appropriate way. Good location, courteous staff, nice breakfast. The mattress on the bed was worn out, need to be replaced. Sagging. The room had a weird smell. Got too warm in the night, even after setting the temperature at 19C.

Overall an excellent stay. Friendly checkin and good explanation of the hotel amenities. Privilege room was functional, comfortable, and provided a good night’s sleep. A particular highlight of my stay was breakfast. Not a vast offering, but what was there was of an excellent standard. I found myself looking forward to breakfast more than I do at many more expensive and luxurious hotels.

Room perfect staff very nice. Breakfast not great! We like black Ceylon tea, usually in teabags. This time the variety of teas were not great so any perfumes!,

We are regular visitors to the hotel Mercure whenever we’re traveling in France. The hotel is well situated,and very nice and the staff friendly. It’s the breakfast which isn’t up to scratch. We’re in Caen about twice a year, but considering another option for our next stay.
