In 2009, dream destinations on the horizon...

Around the world ...a world of customs

Be a good tourist by knowing what to do and what not to do in different places around the world. Here are some rules to help.

Morocco
The caftan is the traditional dress for both men and women.

Thailand
Shoes must be left at the door of the temple.

Japan/China
Accepting a business card is a sign of respect.

Russia
Businessmen like to meet in the banya (steam baths).

Japan
Bend from the waist to greet another person.

Italy
Italians are the most physical in their greetings.

Europe
The thumbs up gesture has its uses in Europe.

India
Eating with your hands is good manners in India.

To avoid offending the locals, choose clothing in keeping with their customs.

Forget about light summer wear

Skirts, shorts, low necklines, or skimpy, short or tight-fitting outfits are to be avoided when visiting villages in Morocco. Such clothing could embarrass the locals and be taken as a sign of disrespect.

At beaches in Turkey, do not strip off completely or go topless. Such practices are strictly forbidden.

In the south of Europe, particularly in Italy, you should cover your shoulders and legs as much as possible before entering a church.

Off with your shoes

In Thailand, if you see footwear left at the door of a house, a temple or a place of business, then you should do likewise: take off your shoes before entering the premises.
