Best Restaurant:

Terrace of Sala Rattanakosin with fabulous view of Wat Arun and the Chao Praya River. Go there at sunset, simply magical!

Best Bar:

Sugar Ray in Ekkamai Soi 21. Firstly make sure you go there on the right day, as it is only open 3 nights a week. Then you need to find it, it is sequestered away on the second floor of a private house. Once you are there, it is tiny. But we are talking great mixology here. Fabulous cocktails made by passionate people. Ask for the Vesper Martini. Play any card game with the barman and if you win the cocktail is free. Fantastic!

Best Café:

Any terrace at K Village on Soi 26 on a Sunday morning when the Porsche and Ferrari club gather there. My young son loves it.

Shopping Highlight

The new vintage weekend night market at Seacon Square. Off the beaten track and used to be called Talat Rod Fai (train market). Find everything from vintage clothes to Vespa spare parts.

Hidden Spot:

Pad Thai Thachang, Chang Pier, before or after your visit to the Grand Palace for the best pad thai in town. The third generation of a cooking dynasty serve up this traditional and beloved Thai dish to perfection. Utterly delicious and the youngest daughter speaks good English, so no fears about ordering.

Cultural Gem:

Wat Arun at dawn. Truly sublime. See above ‘Best Restaurant’ to enjoy with a glass of wine

Must Visit:

Klong Toei fresh market. Try to book a cooking lesson with Khun Poo to get your hands dirty with real Thai food. I visit the market every week to get my fruit and veg; it’s always an experience.
