The Romans came, building villas on the hillsides – you can see their remains today – and centuries later medieval residents carved out an ants' nest of storage tunnels underground. The city still boasts a heart of rare half-timbered beauty, and with the discovery of kaolin nearby, it became an 18th-century boom town, rich on the manufacture of porcelain.
