Historic Jeddah is a superb example of the Red Sea's architectural culture. Since it was proclaimed the official port of Mecca by the third Caliph Uthman ibn Affan in the seventh century, historic Jeddah has served as a symbolic gateway to Mecca for Muslim pilgrims arriving by sea. The city preserves the authentic and traditional setting in which mosques and philanthropic institutions, century-old businesses, stores, souks, cafés, restaurants and street food vendors still thrive. Extensive modern modifications have had little impact on the old residences, and the function and purpose of historic mosques for the community, as well as the majority of their original characteristics, have been preserved. Buildings have only had modest maintenance, leaving the old masonries and their embedded wooden beams untouched, maintaining the site's overall authenticity.
Al-Balad is the historical district of Jeddah. Founded in the seventh century, and serving as Jeddah's historical centre, Al-Balad was proposed for UNESCO World Heritage status by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities in 2009, and it was accepted in 2014. The Misk Historic Jeddah Initiative, a yearly festival held in Jeddah's ancient district, aims to promote Al-Balad's cultural significance. Visitors wander through the historic streets and alleyways during the event.
The Jeddah Corniche is a 30-kilometre-long coastal tourist area. The corniche, which runs along the Red Sea, includes a beachfront road, leisure spaces, pavilions and large-scale civic sculptures, as well as King Fahd's Fountain. The waterfront opened to the public in November 2017 with the objective of becoming a tourist destination.
The King Fahd Fountain, a popular Jeddah landmark and a 30-year-old monument in the centre of the Red Sea, can be seen from across the city. Built between 1980 and 1983, the fountain was named after King Fahd, who presented it to the city of Jeddah. Its waters, which rise as high as 312 metres, embellish Jeddah's sunset. Instead of freshwater, the fountain uses saltwater from the Red Sea. The space is illuminated by around 500 LED lights.
Jeddah's Al Shallal theme park ranks among the Middle East's popular amusement parks. The two-story entertainment structure in the park's centre houses an ice-skating rink and a themed section that is a popular hangout for kids. The park is designed to seem like a jungle, complete with life-size animal sculptures, lighting, and sound effects. The Amazon log-flume attraction is 1,800 square metres in size and has a lagoon with a 15-metre-high waterfall. There are various party rooms, an arcade, and seven restaurants in the entertainment complex.
Take a trip to the Tayebat Museum for a fascinating glimpse into Jeddah's lengthy and cosmopolitan past, which has a wonderfully curated picture of the city's 2,500-year history. The museum is built in a multi-room structure that recreates typical Hijazi architecture of the ancient city, with bay windows topped with delicate wooden lattice work and decorative coral masonry. It is located in the Al Faisaliyah area. The museum provides a living history lesson on the establishment of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and the Arabian Peninsula as a whole, with multiple levels of in-depth displays. There is also a floor dedicated to the city's rich Islamic history.
Fakieh Aquarium is Saudi Arabia's first public aquarium, providing education and pleasure by showcasing the wonders of the Red Sea's underwater habitat as well as marvels from other seas and oceans throughout the world. With over 200 species, including sharks, groupies, stingrays, Napoleon Wrasse, sea horses and Murrays, the Fakieh Aquarium continues growing the sea world. Every day, families may see the incredible dolphin and sea lion performances. Fakieh Aquarium is the place to go if you want to spend a day watching the wonders of the sea swim past, learning about life in the deep seas, or simply spending time with friends or family.
Julio Lafuente, a well-known Spanish architect, worked for the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia in the mid-1970s to "beautify" the city via the construction of landmarks and monuments, and fulfilled this goal by creating unique architectural works that honour the culture of the region. The Globe sculpture, which has a surface area of 600 square metres and was erected in Italy, is intended to portray Mecca as the light and centre of the Islamic world when illuminated. The Globe Roundabout, located north of King Abdulaziz Road, near the Palace of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz and the Al-Murjan area, is a massive glass and steel building. During nighttime hours, it is lighted and comes to life, flashing turquoise light against the Saudi night sky.
