A truly historic Hotel that was slightly let down by the staff

We arrived just after New Years to the hotel shortly after midnight, BA flight was delayed by 4 hours. Doormen helped us into the hotel from our car and helped us with our luggage. We were pointed towards the check in desk. As it was late, we wanted to get into our room asap. After 10 minutes waiting whilst the staff were talking, unsure what about, we were called over. The usual obligatory check in details taken, with little emotion. First disappointment. Deluxe double room. On entering you have storage on the left. On the right is the door to the bathroom. All gold features. The main part that hosts the sink area is very spacious and the gold taps etc fits in with the amazing mosaic floor tiles. There is a toilet compartment and also a shower compartment in this bathroom. Oh, and a crystal chandelier. Large king size bed with two armchairs at the bottom. A nice work desk with chair. All antique style. There is a window overlooking the central area, no Central Park views here. Overall feeling of the room - it summaries the opulence of what I thought The Plaza would be. Happy with it. Dinning and bar - very dissapinting. There is a tiny “Resturant” and bar area as you enter to the left of the building. Although we were staying at the Hotel, we were unable to get a table or seat at the bar, as it was taken up by people who had booked and were not staying. Only one couple we spoke to, that were guests had a table. This was there first time in 4 days! At no point at check in were we offered the chance to book a table. We were ushered to an area above the bar and seemed to be a “holding area” for us to have a drink. We decided to exit after one drink. The “restaurant” was where we were to have breakfast. Breakfast - although spending over £3k on the room for our stay, breakfast was not included. My mistake, or so I thought. We orders breakfast. I had a full English and my partner had an omelette. The full English was an egg, mushrooms and a choice of either a sausage or bacon. Yes, a choice! Not both. I opted for bacon. I asked for gluten free toast, never arrived. The portion size of the full English was pathetic. I was starving, even after finishing. And the cost? $128, this did include an orange juice though! We decided to have breakfast out from there on. Afternoon tea - prior to arrival I had booked this through the Hotel. I informed them that I required a gluten free option. I was offered a glass of house champagne but opted to pay extra for a glass of Cristal. After complaining it was flat, I never got a replacement. The sandwiches for me was highly dissapinting and looked like it was an after thought. My partners, normal, looked nice though. $350 wasted in my opinion. Check out - we had a car booked at 3pm to take us to the airport, this was arrranged by the Hotel prior to our arrival at a cost of nearly $1k for return journey. We had checked out at 10am as requested and had our bags stored. We checked with Conceige services that if we sat in the “waiting area” of the bar, we would be told when the car arrives. At 3:15pm still nothing, so I went outside and the car had been waiting 25 minutes. They had told the staff but no one had thought to inform us. Overall- I’m still glad we stayed there as it was a location we both wanted to go. Would we stay again? No.

Kazi provided an exceptional experience. Very grateful. The tea was outstanding and the setting was as well. Looking forward to being able to come back many more times in the years to come. This has definitely become a staple in family tradition.

Our experience at the Plaza was magical. Mostly because of the exemplary staff that made us feel comfortable, pampered, and very content. Shalim Khan, who waited on us, and Chef Miguel were particularly attentive and kind. I have dietary restrictions and allergies, and they were both very accommodating. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was delightful. I can’t wait to come back again.

We had the most delightful and joyous Afternoon Tea in the Palm Room. The selection of finger foods was delicious. Our guest enjoyed the stunning surroundings as well. Shalm Khan, our Server, was outstanding. Mr. Khan was attentive to detail and kind and delightful. Mr. Khan was welcoming and took great delight in our delight. Many thanks to Mr. Kahn for a wonderful Tea!

Good Food, Amazing Servicej

We went as a family of 5 for Afternoon Tea and had an amazing time. I was initially worried as one of the kids has an aversion to sandwiches, we then had an unexpected medical emergency, meaning we couldn't make our original sitting. However these fears quickly dissolved, the Palm quickly helped us reschedule with no fuss at short notice. On arrival we were quickly and professionally shown to our table, where the amazing Fariz took over. He reflects the epitome of customer service and couldn't have done any more to make us feel special. He was great with the kids and equally lovely to us (the adults). The sandwiches were nice, not great, the sweat treats and scones were very very good, the birthday surprise treats we were given were amazing. However it really was how special Fariz made us all feel that set this experience apart, without him we would have had a nice time, with him it will be a memory of a lifetime. Thank you Fariz.
