Urban but clean and friendly

Clean and rooms well presented. Beds were big but not very comfy. Nice staff - very friendly. Great position to explore Braga. Good breakfast. Parking is easy - under the hotel and relatively spacious. Difficult to access the hotel by car due to road works. We asked for a quiet room as it is in a very urban location and because of the road works. They gave us rooms on the 7th floor and that was fine. The swimming pool on the roof was not open as it was winter. Braga itself was fascinating. A bit like crossing Lisbon with an English cathedral city. The Bom Jesus monument was a good excursion too and well-worth a visit.

We stayed 2 nights at Mercure Braga Centro. We were given a room with balcony at the front of hotel where extensive road works were going on. It was too noisy to sit on our balcony and enjoy a drink. When we checked out I asked the reception person why we were given such a noisy room his attitude was extremely bad he just shrugged his shoulders and said it shouldn't worry us as we were out most of the day. Whenever we walked past reception and greeted them with a hello they so rude and ignored us. The shower was mouldy there was no milk or black tea provided for our tea and coffee, the cleaners left us with 3 tissues in the tissue box. Not what i would expect from the Mercure group we have stayed in many Mercure hotels previously and never experienced this bad attitude and treatment.

Rooms were spacious fairly clean . Hotel needs a touch up . Pool was good on rooftop. Ask for back rooms in hotel though as all road works and lots of traffic in front rooms where we were staying very noisey. Office staff were extremely rude and unfriendly . It is very close to Old town buses and super markets which you can walk to. Beds comfortable shower good . Due to rude unhelpful front office staff from arrival probably would stay somewhere else .

The interior has the charme of a tombe, enough to put anyone off. Which is a shame, as the staff are extremely friendly and eager to make your stay as comfortable as possible - if friendly service is what you seek, then fine. If an appealing interior is equally important to you (or a comfortable bed, for that matter), give it a miss.

Substandard bedding

I've stayed in other Mercure hotels and I'm a member. But I found the bedding to be substandard. The mattress was not very comfortable and the pillows were a joke. On this trip (30 days), I stayed in 11 hotels in 11 cities (all 3-5 star properties but mostly 4 star) and this bedding was by far the worst I experienced. We had a twin room and the twin bottom sheets weren't even wide enough to tuck in the sides of the mattress. Otherwise, the A/C was off for the season but the hotel room was still quite hot. At least all rooms have a balcony but they overlook a busy intersection. The TV had lots of channels listed but the TV wouldn't turn on. (This was possibly just the remote batteries. I didn't complain and I'm not lowering my rating because of the TV.) Aside from my gripes, I'd rate the hotel 4.5-5 TripAdvisor dots. It otherwise met all my needs. It's not in the middle of Braga but it's conveniently close to most everything I needed. (I don't want a hotel in the middle of a tourist area.) Staff at the front desk seemed nice. Based on my experience, this property does not live up to the Mercure name or standards.
